Signs your couch needs cleaning include a buildup of crumbs or pet hair, unsightly stains, grimy discoloration, or bad odors. Your couch typically needs deep cleaning every six to 12 months, but a weekly vacuum helps keep it crud-free. Cleaning schedules vary depending on the couch fabric and color, and one that accommodates shedding pets and careless kids will need cleaning more frequently.

The length of time you have to stay off your couch after cleaning depends on the fabric type and the level of sanitation. Always let your couch fully dry out before anyone sits on it. This can take a few minutes after wiping a leather sofa to a day after deep cleaning fabric. A damp sofa equals damp clothes, and trapped moisture contributes to mold and mildew formation and discoloration. You can speed drying by directing fans towards the sofa, soaking up excess moisture, and keeping the room well-ventilated.

Depending on your type of carpet, a wet/dry vacuum is a great final step to removing blood stains, but it will only help after you’ve used another method to pull out the bulk of the stain. A good option is to use a wet cleaning method, then apply baking soda to the stain, and then follow that by vacuuming thoroughly. Remember that this vacuum type does not work on all carpet types. Wool can shrink with this method, so always check the cleaning instructions from your carpet’s manufacturer.

To remove dog or cat urine from a microfiber couch, use a safe solution for your furniture based on its cleaning code. First, blot up as much as possible, then cover the area with baking soda for a few hours to remove the smell. For S cleaning codes, use a spray bottle to spritz the stained area with rubbing alcohol and gently scrub with a microfiber cloth until the urine is gone. Use the same process for W or S-W cleaning codes but with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of rubbing alcohol. 

It might be possible to use a carpet cleaner on your couch, but it’s not recommended. Some carpet cleaners contain chemicals that are too harsh or abrasive for the soft fabric on your couch. Plus, couches have upholstery codes that dictate what you can and can’t use safely for cleaning purposes, and carpet cleaner generally isn’t included in those codes. If you do decide to use a carpet cleaner, test it on a section of fabric that isn’t visible in case you damage it.
