"Matt repaired a few areas of drywall in our ceiling that had been damaged by a leak and along the edges of some walls. He arrived on time, every time. "Mr. Cantrell did an awesome job on repairing ceiling drywall in a bathroom and bedroom. I also had him paint both those rooms plus another bedroom. He repaired the ceilings, mud, sanded and prepped the ceilings and wall for paint. He used good quality Sherwin Williams paint. Work was completely done on time and I do not have any negatives about his work or person. I will be hiring him again for additional work."

At this level, the drywall is likely too compromised by extensive moisture damage to be considered safe. You can replace either the entire sheet or just the affected section. Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

You should leave a gap between drywall sheets because they naturally expand and contract along with the building framing as temperature and humidity change.
