While power washing isn't a requirement before you stain a fence, it can make the job much easier and faster while reducing manual labor requirements. Even with add-ons and additional protective finishes, a chain-link fence is very likely to cost you less than a wood fence. The only exception would be a split rail wood fence, which can cost about half the price of a chain-link fence or less.
