"He prepared the area, worked around the landscapers and builders who were currently finishing up our home. He moved our sprinkler system and replaced our landscaping. However, you can hot mop and apply a sloped mortar bed over the top (to which the tile can then be adhered). 

No, when done correctly, removing the tile shouldn’t damage the subfloor.
