With the things that were found wrong with the house, he explained what he would have fixed and why. He was able to recommend several companies that did the type of repairs that were required. When we did quotes, we called a couple others, as well as the ones he mentioned. His came in at the best rate and did a nice job. The hone inspection itself was thorough and he pointed out some things that we missed in our initial viewing of the home."

Depending on the location, inspection fees vary from $0 to $250, and any fee paid is generally credited toward any work performed. The biggest difference between black mold and regular mold is that black mold is considered toxic, and far more dangerous than regular types of mold. Black mold is a specific type of mold that appears green, gray, brown, or black. Exterior paint contains a higher level of VOCs, which can be dangerous if you’re exposed to it for a long period of time. The good news is that paint’s toxicity reduces significantly once fully dried and cured. Do not keep open exterior paint cans in your home, basement, or garage, exposing your household to harmful chemicals over time.

If the smell is closer to mildew or rotten eggs, the issue is probably mold or bacteria buildup in the machine or its drainage system. Clean your washing machine thoroughly, paying close attention to the rubber door gasket, as it can harbor odor-causing residue. Some machines have lint or debris filters that should also be checked and cleaned according to the user manual's instructions. Be sure to leave the machine's door or lid open after each use, as this allows for better air circulation and helps prevent mold growth.

If the walls show signs of water damage (discoloration, water stains, or peeling paint) or there’s a musty odor, it’s possible mold is growing. Know the difference between signs of water damage vs. termites because termite infestations are sometimes mistaken for water damage. A more subtle sign might be your own health: If you’re constantly not feeling well or are sneezing, scratching your eyes, or coughing when in a specific room, you could have mold.

After you clean mildew or mold that appears in your home, you expect the nasty odor to disappear, too. Sometimes, though, the odor can linger after cleaning. To get rid of a mold smell, you may need to clean the area every few days for a few weeks. Use a dehumidifier or fans to try to remove moisture from the area.
