"I overfilled my garbage disposer!! My sink had 2 inches of water as a result of my trying a plunger to clear it. I called RS Plumbing at 4:45 in the afternoon and Steve came the next morning at 8:00.

He had me clear the area around the basement pipes in case the clog was more major than I hoped. He was able to clear the drain only in the kitchen area. He worked efficiently and had the drain running freely. I asked him to check the dishwasher hosing in case that was part of the blockage. I have had problems with that before.

RS Plumbing was prompt, competent, and overall good to work with."

"If I could give 10 stars, I would. My water heater started spewing out water at 5PM on an unsuspecting Wednesday evening. I called several local businesses that offered â 24 hourâ service, with no luck coming out that evening. However, I received a call around 7PM from Adam Langridge, the owner of Otter Plumber. He said he would be able to come out to my house by 8PM, which he did. He took a look at the water heater, and he said that I needed it replaced, which did not come as a big surprise considering the unit was over 12 years old. We discussed what options I had, and how to proceed with the replacement. Ultimately, I purchased a brand-new water heater the following day from a local hardware store, and he said that he would go pick it up and would install it the same day. He didnâ t even charge me for the evening house call. He picked up the unit in the afternoon, the following day, and installed the unit within 2 hours, having everything finished by 5PM. From start to finish, it took less than 24 hours to get a new water heater replaced!!! You cannot find a more reliable and efficient worker!!! I would hire Adam 10 out of 10 times without thinking about it twice. Thank you Otter!!!"

"I was so happy when they said that they could be out there the same night as the day that I called.  But then I was considered a non-emergency and my appointment got cancelled.  I was unable to have hot water or heat with out these repairs, but I was not an emergency.
They got a repair man out a few days later and he was able to give me a quote but not fix it.  He was able to tell me exactly what needed to be done and why some of the damaged had happened.  I always appreciate a good explanation of the situation.
The installation person came during the day (so I had a friend there because I was at work) and he forgot to seal one of the holes in the chimeny, this would again make it dangerous to operate either unit.  The plumber that came the same day noticed it, and we got the repair guy back there to seal off the other holes in the chimney.
So when you call them they can be there that day, maybe, but they are going to pressure you to sign up for there 'customer club.'  I think the club is a good deal. but here is the gist of it so that when you call you will alreayd have had time to run these numbers. I do not have an AC unit so it was one $120 (instead of $240) they give you $100 off of the initial visit to see what is wrong (originally $139) and then a percentage off the repair costs, and they do one furnace tune up a year (if you have an AC they also come look at that once).

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

The average cost to replace a water heater is around $1,325, with a typical range of $900 to $1,800 for a standard replacement. The final price depends on the type of heater (tank vs. tankless), its size, fuel source (gas or electric), and the complexity of the installation. A simple one-to-one replacement will be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. However, if you are switching from one type of heater or energy source to another, you can expect labor costs to be significantly higher due to the extra work involved. It's also worth considering that while gas and electric heaters may have similar upfront costs, their long-term operating costs can differ based on local utility prices.

Installing a water heater without a permit can result in high fines—as much as hundreds of dollars per day, in some areas. It can also void your homeowners' insurance and cause problems when selling your home because it violates local building codes and safety regulations.

Several signs indicate your water heater may be failing or in need of replacement. Key indicators include:

  • Age: A water heater older than ten years is approaching the end of its typical lifespan.

  • Water Quality: If you notice rusty or discolored water from your hot water faucets, or a foul odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, it can signal internal corrosion.

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, rumbling, or popping sounds from the tank often mean sediment has built up, causing the unit to overheat.

  • Leaks: Any water pooling around the base of the tank or visible leaks are clear signs of failure.

  • Performance Issues: A decline in performance, such as water not getting hot enough, taking longer to heat up, low water pressure, or decreased efficiency, suggests the unit is struggling.

  • Visible Damage: Obvious rust and corrosion on the exterior of the tank can indicate a more serious internal problem.

While these signs often point to replacement, some issues may be fixable. It's best to consult a professional plumber to diagnose the problem before investing in a new unit.

In most municipalities, a license is not mandatory for water heater installation or replacement. However, we strongly recommend hiring a licensed plumber or water heater installer to handle the work. Licensed installers are far less likely to make a mistake during the installation, which means paying for the experience decreases your risk of a leak and other issues. You can use our state licensing tool to find out if a contractor you’re considering in your area holds a plumber’s license.

The average lifespan of a water heater is eight to 12 years. If your water heater is approaching its first decade of life and is giving you problems, talk to a plumber about your replacement options.

Keep in mind that certain parts of a water heater, such as the anode rod, may need replacement long before the heater itself. An anode rod often has a lifespan of three to five years.
