"We had two windows replaced and they look great. We had old, outdated, drafty windows, and now we have beautiful, secure, functional and high quality windows that have kept in the warmth this winter! Glazing is always done from the outside of the window, while the inside doesn’t require any glazing. This is because the main purpose of glazing is to create a weather-tight seal where the glass meets the frame, protecting against drafts and moisture. Since the exterior is exposed to the elements, that’s the side that needs the weatherproofing.

Most properly installed and maintained windows last between 15 and 20 years. Fiberglass windows last much longer than your average window. Since they don’t warp from temperature changes, rust, or rot, you might be able to hold onto fiberglass windows for up to 40 years. On the other hand, poorly maintained wood windows may only last for a few years.

Drafts, condensation between panes, difficulty operating, or visible frames or glass damage are signs of needed repairs.

Most manufacturers have their name imprinted somewhere on the window, such as the spacer bar, hardware, or frame. Other manufacturers will include an identification number printed on the glass itself. If you’re unable to find either of these, then your window was manufactured locally (oftentimes called a “shop window”). 

With a manufacturer name (or even better, the identification number) you can attempt to research the information to find out when the product was made. Keep in mind this won’t tell you when the window was installed on your home, but can get you close.

To tell if a window is single or double-pane, focus on the edge. Double-pane windows have two glass layers separated by a spacer, which you can usually see around the edges. For single-pane windows, it’s just one sheet of glass. Another easy trick: shine a light at the window—single-pane glass reflects once, while double-pane glass reflects twice. Lastly, if you feel both sides of the glass on a cold day, double-paned windows will feel warmer because of the insulating gap between the panes.
