"They were very professional, friendly, honest, and did a great job. They spent extra time and effort to maintain the integrity of my lawn while repairing my sinkholes. Would hire them again anytime I need Excavation or Asphalt."

"The project went amazingly! Nick was very easy to work with, took the time to explain the entire process, and was very transparent about the costs. The crew was always on time, worked diligently, and before I knew it, the work was done! Nick’s bid was very affordable, but it would have been well worth it if his bid had been the highest. I highly recommend EIB to anyone who wants a contractor who is reliable, honest, punctual, competent, performs high-quality work, has quick response times, charges a fair price, and completes the job on time!"

"Hired them to remove leaves weekly, from my elderly fathers yard. Amazing customer service, quick to respond, very accommodating, they do great work. My Father sends me pictures every week and it looks very tidy. We'll use them out there next summer for additional clean up as well."

"Two issues occurred simultaneously: The first intense rainstorm in September flooded beneath a newly built fence and rushed over a low retaining wall, collapsing it in two places. On the front of the house, the catch basin in the driveway that was supposed to carry water from the drain spouts along the side of the house filled with mud, its connection to the drains apparently destroyed. I drew up a plan for dealing with both issues and received bids from three companies. Tiger's Landscaping owner, Jim Faulkner, seemed most competent and willing to do the job, and his bid was much lower than the others. We discussed the plan in detail and I felt his company was my best option. Jim and crew arrived the day after Thanksgiving and completed the project within five hours! All of the crew members were hard working, kind, and professional, and treated me and each other with respect. They rebuilt the retaining wall and installed a French drain behind it, wrapped in fabric and filled with rocks, and from that a drainpipe carried that water beneath the wall, underground through the yard where it was joined by pipes coming from the drain spouts on the house. The main pipe then continued beneath the fence where it emptied into rocks a few feet from the culvert. They tested it with a hose and it worked perfectly. I am very relieved and pleased to have this dealt with by such a fine company. I would highly recommend Jim Faulkner and Tiger's Landscaping, for any project he decides to tackle."

"I highly recommend NestEx LLC. We needed a gravel pad prepared for 2 sheds on very short notice, and he truly saved the day. Despite the tight timeline, he went out of his way to accommodate us by coming out on a Saturday to get the job done. His professionalism and attention to detail were evident from the moment he started. He meticulously dug out the soil and leveled the entire area before taking his time to expertly layer layer and compact the gravel. You can tell he takes immense pride in his work; the base is rock-solid and perfectly even. What impressed me the most was his thoughtfulness. After finishing a thorough cleanup of the area, he was gracious enough enough to cover the entire pad to protect it from the incoming rain. He wanted to ensure the gravel wouldn’t be compromised so it could harden properly- a level of care you rarely see. If you want someone reliable, hardworking, and genuinely dedicated to quality, look no further. 5 stars all the way."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

Trenching is a specific kind of digging. Trenching means digging a depression in the earth that’s deeper than it is wide, often with heavy machinery. Digging refers to any kind of removal of earth in order to create a human-made depression, hole, or cut in the earth’s surface. You can dig with big tools or even with just a hand shovel.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.
