He did most of the work himself but also hired and worked well with sub-contractors. He started with our garage, creating plans for a remodel with the help of an architect and then precisely implemented those plans. He went on to demolish our old kitchen (to the studs and sub-floor) and rebuild it, according to architectural blueprints. The job required reframing three windows, building walls, putting in a new fir floor, installing cabinetry and a very heavy but beautiful hood/vent, installing appliances, tiling and painting walls, window frames and a box-beam ceiling. A complicated part of the job was building a permanent buffet with rounded corners and tempered glass inserts which he did well. He also built walls and laid flooring in our laundry room. We feel so lucky to have found and worked with Allan, and we’re hoping to be able to work with him again on future projects

- Aquaguard WaterproofingHad seepage of water into finished basement causing moldy carpet and baseboard staining - we had a sump pump but it wasn't hooked up to any type of drainage system so it never got wet enough to pump water out! The salesman came out on a Sunday afternoon and did a thorough inspection of the property inside and out. He recommended that we install the system described above. They were able to give us a discount because we were Angie's List members. A few days later the project manager came out for an inspection and went over the whole process again, in detail. Two days later, the crew came out and got to work. They were professional, showed up on time (called one day when they were late due to a flat tire and subsequently stayed late to finish the work), they sealed the doors and furniture that we couldn't move upstairs with plastic. The process involves JACKHAMMERING around the interior perimeter and removing drywall from the base of the wall to install the system. They were able to avoid disturbing the bathroom and were able to get most of the needed drainage tile in place without having to rip out drywall (only ripped out 6 inches along one wall). They cleaned up completely after they were done to include hosing down our patio and leaving materials that were salvageable (baseboards and tile). They did not throw away the damaged carpet but we knew from the contract that they weren't obligated to do this so that was OK. They did ding up a few walls and in moving the utility sink out of the way cracked a seal but that is understandable given the type of work they were doing. We were going to have to repair drywall and repaint anyway. Overall we are thrilled with the process - and hopefully the outcome - it hasn't rained yet - if there is a problem, we have confidence that they will live up to their reputation and guarantee. For those that might be skeptical about such an extensive system, we already had our yard graded and our gutters inspected/cleaned. I would recommend Aqua Guard to anyone who has basement/house water problems. I had a neighbor who was satisfied with their work as well

"We had a dip in our Family Room floor that had started soon after we moved into our brand new house many years ago. After contacting an independent Structural Engineer to learn that we had no major structural issue, we contacted Matvey for the actual fix. Gardner was the person that came out for the estimate and we found him professional, knowledgable and personable. The job expanded to another area of the house that we didn’t anticipate but it was an obvious problem after he pointed it out. They ended up putting several floor jack supports and three steel beams underneath floor joists to give them additional support. Contractors are super-busy around here but we got lucky and they started the work almost immediately. Their workers were clean and respectful. They laid down paper from the front door to the crawlspace entrance and cleaned up at the end of each day. Chris, the foreman, was also very pleasant and clearly communicated what they were doing and the “trade-offs” we needed to consider as they reinforced the subfloor. We needed to have them come out once after the initial job was done to adjust an area around a beam and they did so rather quickly. We also greatly appreciated Gardner’s extra effort to answer our questions after the work was done and to help facilitate the resolution of a couple of outstanding items. Matvey has a transferable warranty on their work which will help when we go to sell the house and made us feel we made the right decision in having them do the work.

"Andy's team first helped us to trouble shoot the problem and got us to a level of understanding that we had a pretty major job to do but it would be done right. We ultimately received three bids and all of them had similar solution suggestions. What made us choose Andy was a) the price was better, b) he was very knowledgeable and c) he took an iterative approach. He knew that if we could avoid this much disruption in our home by doing something less major, we would. But after doing some test patches, ultimately it was clear that we had to do the full replacement. Andy was the most understanding of our desire to try to save the tiled bathroom. Don, the PM (worth his weight in gold), was at my beck and call - making himself available whenever needed. Everyone involved with the project was professional, courteous, and customer-service oriented. Yes, they cost a bit more - but you get what you pay for. I’m someone who barely has time to manage my family never mind contractors - Don did that for me and way more efficiently than I could have ever done. The design process with Amanda (from Housewarming) and Pete B from BB, was so much fun for me - having waited 10 years to refinish our 1954 kitchen and bath - I was ready, as were they, with great ideas to supplement my own research. In fact, 2 appliances (Best hood and Sharp microwave drawer) I would never have known about had it not been for them and the Best hood might be...well...the best thing about the remodel. :) I highly recommend Better Builders. Their customer service is bar none. They get a B vs an A on price only because they’re was some sticker shock. And this may be unfair because I believe the driver for that is more so related to the lack of workforce in these jobs, which allows the subcontractors to drive up their prices. In addition, Seattle has a healthy economy, driving competition even further. I’d do a special call out to the sub who did our bathroom tile - so patient with me and willing to brainstorm on best design, as well as a call out to the gentleman who did an outstanding job on our hardwood floors. They (BB) choose the best so expect to pay Nordstrom prices but also know the work is going to last way longer, or be that much superior, than anything you’d buy at Forever 21. He employs great workers, treats them well and holds on to them for years. He personally is a genuinely decent and nice guy as well.
