"Home inspection revealed water damage to our brick chimney.  I was concerned about possible damage to my metal roof during a repair job. Jake Stern gave me a reasonable estimate and described the precautions he would take to protect my metal roof.  He and the crew showed up on time, installed scaffolding, covered the roof with blankets and plywood, tore the chimney down to the roof line, hauled away all the old brick, and rebuilt the chimney back it back to its original height with new brick. The replacement brick matches the old brick perfectly. They also also installed new shoulder caps lower down on the chimney.  The crew cleaned up after the job and left the yard and garden in perfect condition.  I'm very happy with the work and would hire them again.

We used Sundance energy because of all the positive Angie?s list reviews. However, our experience seems a little different than most of the reviews. Our project was to remove an existing wood burning fireplace and then have a new gas fireplace installed. Sundance was responsible for purchase and installation of the new unit, reworking the gas supply, removal of the inner metal flue, and re-cap of the existing spark arrestor on the top of the chimney.

 

Working with JD during the initial stages of the purchase went very well. Scheduling the installation date was quick and easy. However, once the work got started, there were a few hiccups:

1. There were scuff marks on the fireplace unit after it was installed. Once I notified them, they fixed it. I would have thought the person in charge of the installation would have done something about it at the time.

1. 2. A fireplace screen was backordered. There was never any communication to us on delivery or installation date. Again, I notified them. One day, a worker showed up to install it without notifying us. Luckily, someone was home at the time.

3. The day after installation, we noticed the spark arrestor was still in place on top of the chimney. We contacted Sundance several times about it. On the day the worker arrived with the backordered screen, this item was finally completed.

1. 4. We opted for a furnace ?tune-up? but nothing was scheduled with us until we contacted them to remind them (at the end of the project) that the furnace work had not yet occurred.

 

The price they charged was fair but the common complaint was that there seemed to be a complete lack of customer communication once the initial work started. I expected someone from Sundance to check that each stage of the work was done correctly but nobody ever contacted us ? we always had to contact them. Once we contacted them, Sundance responded but I expected more pro-active communication so we weren't having to guess whether to be around to wait for workers.

"They gave me several bids and I accepted the one for the stucco work on the outside of the chimney. They’ve been here two days and they’re going to finish tomorrow.  I also got a bid for painting and he came out with the painting contractor today and I accepted that bid.  They’re going to start painting the exterior later this week.  They have been responsive and they have given me low bids.  I have compared their bids to others and they are very competitive.  He’s a general contractor and he has subcontractors doing various things for him.  I had him look at my kitchen and he gave me ideas about what he can renovate there as well.  He’s got plumbers and electricians and everybody."
