We examined the chimney together and noted many failed joints and the need for a new crown.  Work was done, but the crown suffered some erosion due to rainfall (they did not tarp it) and the leaking into the house continued.  I called them back, they returned and did a few more joints.  Still leaking and they returned again with the same output.  Still leaking.
So, I called another company. They were not very complimentary of the previous fixes, in fact pronounced some of them as unprofessional. They then fixed the chimeny tuck pointing properly, replaced a few bricks, redid some of the flashing and charged 1/3 less than the Mad Hatter company

He came out to see why the fireplace was smoking and showed up the best way to prevent it.  We initially thought there was build up in the chimney, which is why we called.  He explained how to get rid of the smoke and was very respectful and pleasant.  Also, when he had to cancel because of the snow storm, he made sure to call ahead.  He was very punctual.

We found them on Angie's List and used an Angie's List coupon. Once we got the right guy here it was great. The first guy came and said he didn't understand our flue, second guys car broke down, the third guy was the owner and he did a fantastic job. I would use them in the future if needed.

The worker arrived on time and was polite but didn't have a ladder tall enough for a two story building.  He said the work order indicated four houses not a two story 4-plex.  He thought maybe he could clean the chimneys from the fireplaces rather than from the top on the roof.  I have never seen chimneys cleaned this way so I called my husband to load our ladder on our truck from home and bring it to the job site.  The technician checked all the fireplaces while waiting but didn't wear protective covering over his shoes which I questioned.  My tenants always take their shoes off at the door.  Their choice-not my requirement.  I respect their choice so I follow their example.  He cleaned all the chimneys and then vacuumed inside the fireplaces.  He wore covering over his shoes this time.  All the fireplaces were free from any debris on his arrival but I imagine there was soot in the fireplaces after using the chimney sweep.  I watched him vaccuum one apartment fireplace but left as the smell of soot was bothering me.  He did protect the floor in front of the fireplace.  I definitely recomend the company replace the vacuum cleaner.  One of the apartments was vacant and had just been redone--new paint, carpets, cabinets, etc.  I found a fine layer of soot on the fireplace mantel and anything nearby which I cleaned up.  This was definitely not acceptable for the other tenants.  Two of the chimneys did not have chimney caps.  The technicain recommended we install them.  We agreed so he installed one but did not have another in his truck.  I would not use this company again mainly due to the lack of organization and poor equipment.

The four chimney sweeps cost $319.80 and the one chimney cap cost $255.00 for a total of $629.41 which includes tax.

The company had given us an hour time frame for their arrival and they were well within that time frame. He called me within the time frame and let us know where he was and exactly what time he'd arrive and he was on time. He covered the fireplace area with a cloth and cleaned the stove pipe and stove with a powerful vacuum. We could see the dust and particles being sucked down into the vaccum. It turned out very clean. He was always a professional and very personable. We would use this company again.

See above.  I have upgraded the grade report.  As I said before, the original bad grade reflected mostly the quality of the original fired employee and his work, and the fact that it isn't an "A" now reflects that it took so long to resolve the problem.

It went very well.  Our service tech was Darrell and he was polite, knowledgable and patient.  We showed up a few minutes late for our appointment as I hit traffic, and he called to let us know he had arrived and let us know he would get started with inspecting the outside until we arrived.  I originally called on this company due to the good reviews on Angie's list, and to take advantage of the $99 special.  When I was on the phone with the booking person she made sure I knew that the $99 was for a lined chimney and if it turned out that our new place had no liner it would be an additional $50.  It was good to have this info up front so we didn't feel like it was sprung on us after they arrived.  With tax it came to $164 plus change. The whole process was a good experience.  After the cleaning Darrell was very careful to make sure the insert was straight and that every speck of dust was cleaned up.  He wore shoe covers in the house and was polite, respectful of our furnishings and friendly to the kids when they came through.  We will definitely call them again when we need more work done.

Our roof was leaking around the chimney. Mad Hatter tuckpointed the joints, installed new flashing and a new crown on our chimney. Three or four days after the work was completed, our roof began leaking several feet away from the chimney. Because it was Sunday evening and pouring down rain and I didn't think it was coming from the chimney, we called a roofing company that does emergency appointments. Apparently, the new flashing was not sealed properly and the water was leaking in through the silicone caulking. In addition, the new cap had not sat under a cover long enough and was still wet. The roofers scraped off the caulking applied by Mad Hatter and said that if the cap did not cure by the end of summer, they would come back, scrape it off, and re-apply it properly. When I mentioned this on the phone to the Mad Hatter folks, they ignored me and explained how I could pay my bill. I will never allow these people within 100 feet of my roof again.

I called about a week before hand after looking them up on Angie's List. I was called right back and scheduled an appointment for the next week. One person came, showing up a little early which was just fine. We went over the job and he went to work finishing up within an hour. He also vacuumed out the access above the insert and explained that there would be a little residual that he just could not get to. That was fine as I was having anew insert put in.

The rep showed up a little late but it only took him a little over an hour to get the work done. I only called them because it was a new house. He basically scrubbed out the upper flu of both fire places and vacuumed them out. I don't know if it was worth 200 bucks but I don't have any complaints.

The person who came out was really nice and kept the place clean, which I appreciated. They had a special offer wherein you would get the chimney sweep work and an inspection done for around $100. However, it wasn?t really an inspection. That?s something that I didn?t like very much. Other than that, the work he did was good. He just looked at the chimney and cleaned it. He was very nice and clean. That was all very good, but there was no inspection. I think the price was good. The quality was good for one part, but the work wasn?t done for the other part. I would use their services in the future too.

Mad Hatter took care of the chimney over the course of a few very wet and partially frozen weeks in December 2009. They worked outdoors when the weather let up but had to leave the chimney covered with a tarp most of that time. They didn't need to access the interior of the house until the chimney was crowned, capped, sealed, washed, and tuckpointed. I only needed to be home during the sweeping operation, which involved removal of two whole industrial wet/dry vac-loads of old soot, moss, and ash. Throughout the entire operation, Mad Hatter's staff were punctual, helpful, courteous, and flexible.

Promptly returned phone calls. Price matched all the other quotes out there but they gave me an angie's list discount. Guy came in with a shop vac and plastic. I left the room for a few minutes and when i came back- aprrox 15 min- he was done with the inside. I really wished i would have stayed to see what he did. Really hoping i didn't pay $100 to have my chimney shop vac'ed alone. I have a shop vac in the garage.. He did alert me that we don't have a chimney cap but the price to put one on seemed way to much considering the price of them at H.Depot. He was very nice, professional and educated me on chimneys all around. I would use them again but watch next time :).

They did not bill me for quite awhile. I had to call them. The job was at a rental property and they told the renter they thought it needed some work, but they did not tell me. I had to call them regarding this. I had to keep after them regarding the service and bill. They did show up when they said they would but did not give me the information I needed. Perhaps they did not understand the renter was not the owner. And they were also really late on the billing. They were good with the renters. I would not use them for the things they recommended because of what happened.
