"Steve was amazing! He came out the same day to look at the tree, provide an estimate, then came back the next day to remove the tree. He was quick, efficient, friendly, and professional. I highly recommend Douglas Tree Service!"

"Mike and his team at Highlander Tree Service recently removed a maple tree from a steep incline location. From the beginning of communication with Mike, he was friendly, knowledgeable and very efficient with immediate cost information. He not only quoted the price, but offered to do other helpful tasks with a willingness that is so refreshing. Mike and Nick worked this process with skill and such carefulness in the surrounding area and also the clean-up process was impeccable. I highly recommend their service and work ethics. Thank you, Highlander Logging and Tree Service!"

"Tedd, was courteous, punctual, knowledgeable. and very proficient. He explained everything as he went and his cleanup was superb, better than our local lawn services do in the neighborhood. I will use them again."

"everything went very well. The trees that we had cut were close to the water pump and our home. He cut the trees and told us where they would land and they landed just where he said. The job was done in less that 2 hours if that. A very good experience and we would hire him again. We would and have recommended him."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Costs range from $500 to $5,000 per tree, depending on size, location, and accessibility.

You may be looking to identify maple trees to use for home improvement projects. In that case, you can tell hard maples by looking at their leaves. Leaves will have a U-shaped dip, or sinus, between the points, or lobes, of the leaves. Leaves of soft maples tend to have V-shaped sinuses.

If you already have the cut wood in front of you, look for a light, uniform color to identify hard maple wood and check for variations of red, gray, or brown streaks and an overall darker color in soft maple wood.

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

Some trees will bounce back just fine, and others will struggle and possibly die. Evergreens, for instance, have a very difficult time recovering after droughts and usually die after periods of extreme dryness. Usually, you’ll have to just wait and see—if the drought occurs in wintertime, it’s possible that your tree will recover during the gentler springtime.

Trees provide many benefits, including shade, habitat for local wildlife, and cleaner air, so it’s always a good idea to try an alternative strategy like crown reduction before you chop one down. But sometimes, cutting down a tree is the only option (like if it’s severely diseased). A licensed arborist can assess the tree and recommend the best course of action.
