"Robert is an awesome contractor, he's very honest and up front about pricing. He will try his best to meet your budget. He also does great work. Great value for pricing, he also stained my fence and gave me a great deal on it. I would definitely hire Robert again for my house projects. 10 out of 10 stars for real."

"Very quick response! He gave me an estimate on the spot, some negotiation, and I agreed. That was Friday, fence posts installed on Saturday and fence completed on Monday. I am thrilled! Amazing to work with and I will definitely work with him in the future and refer them to friends and family! Very satisfied!"

"Granados were a pleasure to work with. Friendly, but still very professional. They clearly stated what would be included in the bid, and even offered suggestions. Wood fence was built in just two days and looks nice."

"We needed several days of carpentry work done on short notice when the guys who came to replace our gutters found significant rotting wood in our walls. They recommended Sam Mireles at First Impression, and he did an amazing job for us. Starting the next day, he carefully removed our siding and shingles, determined the extent of the water damage, removed damaged plywood, framing etc. and then put it all back together. He was a pleasure to work with, had the right power and other tools and experience for the job, discussed all decisions and recommendations with us, and showed attention to detail which we appreciated. He replaced all of the rotten plywood and framing, re-used the siding and shingles, and caulked to seal it up so that we're now ready to paint. His price was very reasonable, particularly given that he commuted from Gold Bar to Mercer Island each day. We couldn't be happier with his work, will recommend him to our friends, and will definitely have him back the next time we need a carpenter. Highly recommended!"

"Escapes did a great job installing two fences for me. Dan was easy to communicate with before the work started. The week of the work, the installers showed up by 9am every day and worked straight to 5pm, only stopping for lunch. Tanner made sure to ask me questions along the way so that the fence would meet my expectations. They did a thorough job removing the chain link fence that was very overgrown with ivy. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to have a fence installed."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

You have several options for anchoring a temporary fence to keep it from falling down. Sandbags can be used as a standard weight, but they may blow away or fail in strong winds and inclement weather. Spikes and bolts are a cost-effective and easy-to-install alternative, but drilling can be difficult if the ground is frozen, too soft, or too hard. Another option is wind braces, which should be bolted into the ground to withstand turbulent wind; however, like spikes, they can be challenging to install in very soft or hard ground.

The ideal distance between fence posts depends on several factors, including the terrain, the purpose of the fence, and the material used. For different types of fences, here are some general guidelines:

  • Wood and Metal Fences: Posts should be spaced between 5 and 8 feet apart.

  • Vinyl Fences: Spacing can be between 6 and 8 feet.

  • Chain-Link, Mesh, or Lattice Fences: Posts can be set anywhere from 4 to 25 feet apart, with 4-10 feet being common for chain-link.

  • Wire Fences: Spacing can be up to 12 feet apart.

A horizontal fence is typically more expensive to build than a vertical fence, often costing between 10% and 20% more. The higher cost is due to the need for a higher grade of lumber and more posts to prevent the boards from sagging, which increases both material and labor expenses. Despite the higher price, horizontal fences tend to be more durable and offer a more distinct, modern look compared to the more common vertical picket style. However, they may not be the best option for privacy, as there can be slight gaps between the horizontal rails.

There are pros and cons to vinyl fencing. The drawbacks are that it can be expensive up front compared to options like chain-link fencing and that it’s vulnerable to fading. The material is difficult to repair without replacing entire panels or the whole fence, and you can’t paint over vinyl to change the color. However, this material is impressively durable and easy to maintain, making it a good choice for many homes.

You’ll need to bury the garden fence about 1 foot underground. It’s tempting to save on materials by burying the fence just a couple of inches, but if you do so, determined pests will still be able to dig under the fence and access your plants. Burying your garden fence deep into the soil is an important step that allows you to attach a wire barrier to the fencing.

Burrowing animals (like voles, moles, rabbits, and gophers) can’t dig or chew through this wiring, meaning that you’ll be keeping your prized petunias or your robust veggie garden from being eaten.
