"Rumi was hired as a sub contractor on our remodel, so we really didn't have a choice in the matter. I can say that the bath tile looks good from a distance, but up close is a different matter. There are holes in the grout, crooked tiles, uneven seams, poorly cut schlutters, and caulking that failed the first time we used the tub. The toilet was placed, then caulked around the base, without any cleaning. I still have grout chunks and hair imbedded into the clear caulk. I am still cleaning tile adhesive from the floor. The tub fixtures were installed incorrectly. They used the old sink plumbing on the install, instead of providing new. The subsequent leak damaged a $2000 cabinet significantly. And, when under the house today, we found that the bathtub wasn't plumbed correctly, and has been leaking."

Janes Gypsum Floors has over 40 years of experience installing gypsum concrete and specialized floor fills. Contact us in Monroe, WA.

"Wow! Janes is a standout company to work with. From scheduling to clean-up, working with Janes was a great experience all around. Tiffany, the Scheduling Manager, went to bat to schedule us for the floor leveling work in our basement around my college daughter's schedule since we had to take our water heater out of commission for a few days. Jeff, the Project Manager, communicated well and often getting us ready for the job and patiently and quickly answered all of my sometimes silly questions as we were prepping for the project. On the day of the job, Jeff arrived hours ahead of the field crew to take measurements and layout the job. The field crew was polite, respectful, patient with my questions and curious gawking while they worked and they laid down a beautiful level floor. They left the job site as clean as they found it. I should note that our job though relatively small for them (about 800 sf) was tricky because we had a very uneven floor that needed to be poured and leveled to some very precise constraints. They nailed it."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Whether you can repair or install plaster yourself depends on the project size and your tolerance for DIY projects. You may feel perfectly comfortable taking on a small plaster repair project, but prefer to leave a room restoration or renovation to a local plaster repair professional.

Since the project's end result, including its durability and appearance, depend on how well you prepare the wall and apply the plaster, you may want to let a professional take it on if you're not 100% confident.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

If the holes in the plaster are small, you can fill them with layers of patching plaster until they’re filled. After it dries, you can sand the plaster and paint over it. If the hole is much larger, consider using bonding plaster first and then a layer of patching plaster, completing the process with sanding and a layer of paint.

There are several warning signs that a ceiling crack is connected to a larger issue. For starters, if the crack is wider than 1/8 inch or longer than 12 inches, you might have a more serious problem. The same applies if you have multiple smaller cracks or cracks going across the ceiling and down the wall. In any of these situations, you should ask a professional to assess the damage.

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.
