"As a single mom I was very apprehensive about the entire process. After several quotes, I met Rick Nemyre who was extremely patient with me. I had many questions and ideas and he answered all of my requests professionally and enthusiastically. I got an attractive new roof with three new skylights with a fantastic warranty. I loved that Rick was honest about what I actually needed instead of trying to sell me unnecessary products. I am very happy with everything and would highly recommend their services."

"Replaced the skylight quickly, but had to come back a second time after the skylight wasnt secured great the 1st time. (Only 2 screws installed out of ten holes, when inquired they said tech had his batteries die on him). I guess I should have asked as part of the quote but the wood molding trim around the drywall just inside the skylight was a little moldy from the skylight leaking. Wasn't replaced when light was done. Flashing was left alone, appeared to be in good shape still."

"On a scale of 1-10, we give this company an 11, based on the outstanding results they delivered. This was an incredibly challenging project. We have a very steeply pitched metal roof on a two-story home with skylights and a turret. We hired M&H to remove many years of mold off our roof, clear and clean all the rain gutters and reseal our skylights. They responded very quickly to my bid request, and within the same day performed a physical onsite roof inspection, rather than just generating an estimate based on a Google Earth photo like so many of their competitors. We are seniors on a fixed income and this is a major expense for us. We solicited quotes from several reputable and highly rated roof cleaning companies. M&H provided us with an extremely competitive bid. Avi committed to a firm, fixed price upfront. All the other bids I received were subject to additional charges during the cleaning, Excellent results. Highly recommend."

"We originally hired Maury's team just for roof repairs but it went really well so we started using them for other projects including new fence construction, in-ground sprinkler updates, repairs to our outdoor pond and pump, and installation of a new brick patio. It was a long punch list and we are so happy they were able to help us. They are highly skilled and extremely hard working, they are a impressive crew. Maury is also a great communicator, responsive and accessible. I will definitely use them again, highly recommend."

Small jobs welcome

"My experience with three employees was outstanding. The initial phone conversation was friendly and professional. The interactions from the first conversation with the owner of Emerald City Skylights to the completed project was excellent. I knew exactly what I was buying, the quality of the product, and a complete description of the installation process. The installer arrived on time, helped with locating the positions for the two skylights, and described what he would be doing. He completed the installations quickly and professionally. He even cleaned the dust particles from the ceiling openings. The owner of the company visited during the process and described the choices I had for defusers needed to soften the sunlight. I highly recommend Emerald City Skylights. The owner is smart, professional, experienced, and funny. The price was acceptable, and I am very pleased with the results."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

Installation typically takes 1-2 days, depending on the required roof type and structural modifications.

The most popular treatment for a skylight is skylight shades. There are five primary types: manual, motorized, blackout, cellular//honeycomb, and Venetian. Motorized skylight shades are the most convenient, especially for skylights that are higher up, but manual shades are the most cost-effective treatments. Cellular/honeycomb shades are a perfect option for anyone who wants energy efficiency and an attractive look.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.
