"Smart Electric was pretty good to work with. We were especially pleased with the technician, Gram, who was kind, communicative, and thorough with his work. He came back multiple times for final touches and adjustments after the inspection report. In general, there were a couple of communication gaps with the company when initiating the project and day 1 of work, but it got settled by the end. We are pleased with our new heat pump and furnace."

"I just bought a large older home and received my first electric bill.....wait for it.....$850 for this month! Ouch!! I decided I needed to figure out where to start and what to replace and where and how exactly I was burning through so much energy. I called Evergreen Energy Services. Kirk was great! He showed up on time and with a smile. He was very professional and explained exactly what tests he would be preforming during my homes energy audit. He showed me all of the areas my home was not sealed and letting cold air in and letting all my warm air out. Kirk offered ideas and advice on making my home more energy efficient, lowering the heating bills and saving money. Kirk does not sell Energy Products so I felt like I got a very non bias energy consult and was not pressured towards certain Brands or Systems. I would definitely recommend Evergreen Energy Services! Megen 😊"

"William and Matt from HSR showed up on time and wore masks. I am absolutely blown away with the quality of their work and responsiveness to my requests. My project involved replacing our current furnace with a new furnace which is now installed in the attic. They promised me much reduced noise and greater energy efficiency. All goals 100% achieved. Highly recommend William, Matt and his team of workers."

"Heather is awesome! She was punctual, knowledgeable, and courteous, and took the time to inspect everything thoroughly. She showed me how to change out the furnace filter and even rearranged the rocks in my fireplace to give it a fresh look, above and beyond! She also troubleshot some work done last year (by another contractor) that was not done properly and gave good advice. It's rare I feel good about shelling out a few hundred bucks for maintenance work, but Heather delivered a high quality service and left me with the confidence that everything was checked correctly and is in good working order. Thank you!"

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

There are energy-efficient options when building a cottage. Select green building materials, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient windows when designing your cottage. Options such as solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and LED lighting can lower your utility bills and reduce your environmental impact. Many builders offer energy-efficient upgrades as part of the design process.

Yes, most audits include a report with prioritized recommendations for improving energy efficiency. Confirm with your auditor.

Dehumidifiers typically use 300 to 700 watts of electricity per hour, whereas portable dehumidifiers use about 40 watts per hour. The exact amount of electricity your dehumidifier will generate depends on its capacity and energy efficiency. Generally, higher-capacity dehumidifiers generate more electricity than lower-capacity units, but they also usually have better energy efficiency over the long run.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

A good SEER rating for an HVAC system is typically between 15 and 20. However, minimum requirements vary by location; HVAC systems in northern states must have at least a 14 SEER rating, while those in southern states need a minimum of 15. For the highest possible efficiency, look for units with a SEER rating of 21 or higher. It's important to remember that a SEER rating represents the maximum efficiency a unit can achieve, not the level at which it will operate at all times.
