The best place to put an electrical outlet depends on your needs. A good rule of thumb is to install outlets every 6 feet in large rooms. Hallways over 10 feet long need one electrical outlet minimum. 

If you find yourself needing extra plug-ins for all of your gadgets, you may want to increase the number of electrical outlets in your room. When adding outlets, keep in mind that older homes could have outdated electrical panels. In these cases, you may need a pro to upgrade you from 100-amp to 200-amp service before increasing the power load.

While you might not need to put lights and outlets on separate circuits, some local codes may require that you use separate circuits. Installing a separate circuit helps prevent total darkness in your home when your receptacle outlets take on too much power and blow a fuse or trip the breaker. It also costs less and is easier to simply install a new circuit.

GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter, which means it has the ability to detect a ground fault and shut the circuit down before it creates hazards. General breakers may also do that because ground faults can cause overloads, but they’re more focused on amp overloads from any cause. GFCIs are often installed in specific outlets, but breakers can come with GFCI capabilities built in for broader ground fault protection.

The NEC requires electrical outlets be installed in a kitchen that has a sink 12 inches wide and 24 inches deep. According to the code, that outlet must be within 2 feet of the kitchen sink. Bathrooms must have at least one electrical outlet, it must be GFCI, and it must be within 3 feet of the bathroom sink.

Most electric water heaters have a built-in shut-off switch, so you can simply turn that to the OFF position. Some water heaters have the switch inside a panel, so you might need to unscrew the panel, remove it, move aside the insulation, and then shut the water heater off. To make sure it’s off, you can also locate the switch for your water heater in your electrical panel and shut the power off there. Most electrical panels have dedicated switches for the water heater, so you can shut off the power without affecting the rest of your home.
