"David Jackson and his crew did an outstanding job for us painting our home and repairing a significant portion of the hardy plank and framing under our front porch. The crew was professional, friendly and willing to spend time answering questions. David also personally took the time to explain concerns he saw with the house and made some recommendations to us going forward. I'd highly recommend hiring Millenium."

Each step of the process (power washing, prepping & painting) Bryan and his crew showed up on time and got the job done in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Llanos Painting. It was a real pleasure doing business with Bryan and his crew."

"I was looking for a personable team to come in and remodel my basement into an entertaining space and these guys did a wonderful job! Not only did they work with me on price after I shared some numbers from another company with them, but they also helped me design and maximize my space for what I was looking for. Communication was spot on for any optional and/or needed changes and very respectful of our space. I highly recommend these guys!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.
