"I called and asked them to come in and install some new light fixtures, right off the bat they were really polite. They came in the very next day, got the job done fast and did a beautiful job. Will be calling again if I need any other electrical work. Amazing workers and outstanding customer service."

"Dave at American Electric was excellent! He was very prompt to respond to my request. He came out the same day to look at the site and give us a reasonable estimate. He then returned, within a couple of days, on the day he said he would and completed all of the work that day. He got the necessary permit and left it posted for the inspector. Dave is friendly, professional and we loved the work he did for us! I'd recommend Dave and American Electric to everyone!"

"Gathard Electric installed an electrical outlet for us at a vet clinic. Electrician arrived on time & did quality work. They did the job for us without providing an estimate first (per our request, as we were tight on time), so they charged us an hourly rate. Rate was fair, but total cost was more expensive than we anticipated. I would use their services again, but would request that we work off a flat rate instead of an hourly rate so we can stay within our budget."

"Bob went above and beyond the service I originally hired him to do. I had another problem with my computer which I created but he came to my rescue and he did not even charge me for the additional service"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

If the fan doesn’t have a switch, connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan; connect the green wire to the ground wire; connect both black wires; and connect both blue wires. If yours has a switch, the white and green wires are connected the same way. However, connect the ceiling’s red wire to the light’s black wire and the ceiling’s black wire to the fan’s black wire.

A sudden tiny spark is normal when first plugging in an appliance. However, if your plug regularly sparks, has other concerning problems, or worries you for any reason, you should call a licensed electrician to have it inspected and ensure that it is not at risk of causing an electrical fire.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Before hiring an electrician, check out the contractor’s official website, read reviews, and look them up on your local Department of Labor’s website. If you’re hiring for a complex job, pay special attention to their level of expertise. Also, call up pros directly to ask about their insurance status, specifically liability insurance, and request customer references.

You can tell if a breaker is GFCI by looking for a red or yellow test and reset button that you can press in and out. You’ll know if an outlet is GFCI if the red reset button is located in between the two pronged sections.
