"Started out as a repair to some very old skylights. Once it was shown repair wasnt really a viable option, Amazing Skylights did a great job with a new pair of skylights, including the tax credit available for solar power shades."

"Todd was great! He came out and knew exactly what was wrong with my skylight right away. He didn't try to over sell me on anything and even called when he was going to be 7 minutes late for the initial appointment! George was also wonderful and both were very professional. The workmanship is excellent and clean!"

"My double hung Anderson windows came with the house and work perfectly, except the double pain glass is not treated UV or infrared. After considering window replacement I decided the best option was to professionally tent the windows for one tenth the price of new windows. I found Arctic Window Tinting in the Angie's magazine with a discount for members and them called for an estimate. I spoke with Bob who answered my questions and scheduled a home visit at my convenience. He measured the 24 windows and 2 skylights and discussed the options. He was very professional and I never felt pressured to up-sell or make a decision. After reviewing the options, I selected the Purlite 40 to give me almost 100% UV rejection and 80% heat rejection. The installer was very meticulous and careful to get every window perfect. The results look like factory tinting and the natural shade does not diminish the wonderful view I have of the backyard and forest. Even close up you cannot tell it was not part of the original window. The effect is just what I wanted. We no longer have to close the blinds on the southwest side of our house. Our house stays cooler and we are saving energy for only a small investment in tinting."

"Mr. Mackay came over very quickly after being contacted, and checked over our roof. He was very forthright and clear with his explanation of what we need to do. He told me that he was basically talking himself out of a job, but that we can do the work ourselves (sealing seams on the sunroom roof and caulking the skylights as needed). He said that it would be a lot cheaper for us to hire a MHIC licensed handyman to do the work, as they could certify the roof, as well. I appreciate Mr. Mackay's candor and professionalism, and will definitely contact them in future if needed."

"Roofing and gutter work was very efficient and satisfactory. Removed old shingles and paper and replaced with new paper, ice shield and shingles, all in the same day. Took care to protect foundation plantings and deck. All materials removed and magnetic roller used to pick up loose nails in the grass. Gutters were replaced subsequently; again all work was professional and completed quickly with all debris removed.
Skylight took some work to get the right replacement - non-standard size - but once the right replacement skylight was delivered, removal and installation was done quickly.
Tony and Hassan worked with my insurance company and the adjuster to fully identify what needed to be replaced and did the work for the amount approved by the insurance company. Tony was on-site when the adjuster arrived for his inspection and accompanied him throughout.

The good : All leaks appear to be fixed and the gutter systems work fine. The roofing team was replaced with a group that while excellent, did admit to being hired for this job rather than being employees. The sales work was excellent except that mis-measurement of the skylights caused the wrong skylights to be ordered. That may not have been the fault of Sunshine, I do not know. Ordering and delivery took 2 weeks. The team I met was helpful and the lead roofer was knowledgeable and very good. We had some communication challenges with the rest of the team. Gutter work was excellent, although the system used flows over in heavy downpours even with 6 inch gutters. Sunshine uses the EagleEye satellite roof measurement, which was accurate in ordering, and the sales person was excellent. He inspected the roof from above, which I felt very comfortable with.

The less than good dubious: The mis-ordering of the skylights slowed the process of installation, but the team corrected, found the skylights on a Saturday and installed them. Some of the copper work could be better, but passable. In general the installation was A- and did not affect the review.

Operations and billing was less than an A. I had to call for invoices to be sent (on the 20th) and call for information on scheduling. There are some issues with the billing process (Invoices are unnumbered and don't have an invoice date.) Oddly the sale date was printed, but most companies have terms 30 days after completion. Dunning began less than a week after completion with turnover to a collection agency threatened. If you print an invoice on the 21st, it comes on a Thursday the 23rd, you don't threaten collections on the 26th. Terms were not printed on the bill. The company is a GAF master elite installer. Since the whole roof was not done, the GAF inspections were not performed. I would have liked that the company as a Master Elite, inspects all their roof work as matter of course, rather than only where specified by GAF policy.

Price seemed higher than normal, but not uncomfortably so. The copper chimney flashing was a $500 up charge, which was more than expected.

In general, an invoice should be delivered on completion, especially for companies with short terms.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would expect issues with their work to be relatively rare especially on standard roofing and gutter replacement. Homeowners are well advised in all contracting to track all invoices and payments, and paying by check only with an invoice.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

Professionals repair or seal a skylight by inspecting for damages, resealing any gaps with appropriate weatherproofing materials, replacing cracked glass or seals, and ensuring the frame is tightly fitted to prevent future leaks and ensure proper drainage.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Roof windows and skylights can be installed on various roof materials, but skylights are usually the only option that you have if you have a flat roof or a roof with a slope under 15 degrees. In these cases, roof windows have too high of a risk of leaking to be suitable options. The specific installation requirements may vary, so it's important to hire a window replacement contractor. Certain types of roofs may not be ideal if they limit the size of the window or if they pose an issue with rainwater collecting around the area.
