"I had an incredible experience working with Palencia Masonry. They offered a great quote, started my project within a few days, and finished quickly. They built me a new step with a herringbone pattern that looks absolutely incredible. The rest of the repointing work also looks wonderful. 10/10 would recommend and hire again."

"Excellent work and service throughout. It was a renovation project to remove old retaining wall timbers and put in block, pavers, and cap stones â along with new curbstone for another bed and a new parking area, and some new plantings. Big project and very complicated with both renovations and new work; really about 4 projects packaged together into a 3 week duration. Bryan and the crew were consistently creative, building a landing that tied in to multiple levels, and capping a couple smaller existing block walls to make everything tie together. Always willing to find a way to make it work, adjust to my preference, and respectful of our space."

You should use cement for a chimney crown. The purpose of the chimney crown is to protect the mortar below from water damage and the effects of weather. For this reason, chimney crowns should only be made using cement. When repairing a crown, use caulks and sealants designed for cement repair rather than mortar repair.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

Brick houses can last at least 100 years with minimal maintenance. With regular care and attention, including mortar repointing, brick houses can last 500 years or more.

Yes, it is essential to prime or seal a brick fireplace before painting. Brick is a porous and highly absorbent material, so without a primer, paint can seep into the surface, resulting in uneven coverage and allowing the natural brick color to show through. To avoid this, apply one or two coats of a masonry primer. The primer will seal the brick and provide a smooth, uniform layer for the paint to adhere to. Ensure the primer is completely dry before applying the topcoat of paint.

Yes, you can do German schmear on stone. You can account for the more textured and rough surface of stone by using a large paintbrush instead of a putty knife. A brush allows you to drag mortar across the stone to get it into all the cracks and crevices. However, a brush will cover more of the surface, so you may need a wet sponge to scrub excess mortar and expose more of your stone.
