"My home had a 16 year old furnace and air conditioner which both were not working probably and my electric bill was sky high trying to cool the upstairs of my home. I had Climatemakers come and check out my unit as well as give me a price on a new system and installation. The price of a new 16 seer was the best out of the hundreds of HVAC companies in the Hampton roads area and I couldn’t be happier with the installation crew they were very Quiet and respectful do to the wife working from home. They even matched the thermostat backing with the wall color. The wife was Very happy with that, I was very happy with my electric bill dropping over half of what I was paying the summer before. ps. Thanks for the prompt service during the Covid outbreak."

"Outstanding, very happy with overall product. Final product is very neat and clean, and will improve overall quality and value of my house. Initially provided quote requiring no down payment. Quote was $2K less than similar company, whose quote did not include the structural repairs. Policy changed requiring 30% down payment at contract signing, but honored initial quote of no down payment. Honored $300 coupon. Agreed to more powerful dehumidifier than quote to ensure adequate coverage per manufacturers recommendation. Installed girder entire length of house at no extra cost, though quote was for slightly over half the house. When drywall cracked after jacking, had painter respond next day to patch and paint. Collaborative final inspection. Had worker come back after inspection to tape minor rips in moisture barrier, and left extra tape. Took split payment, check and credit card. Cleaned up every day, had access to crawl space daily normally without requiring access to house. Trustworthy. Feel like they will be responsive if there are any issues in future."

"I have used ACE Handyman 3 times. Every time I have had a different representative come to my home. I have had the same installers two times, this time it was another installer for a roof repair. I had a roof done less then 4 years ago, meaning the roof was brand new. Ace did not do the roof installed at that time. With all this rain we noticed we had a leak because the ceiling had a discolored spot in the bedroom. We called the other company figuring of course this would be under warranty, no we got no response from this company. We now know they are out of business, the phone number is even disconnected. We called ACE because they have done work on our home before on two other occasions. We figured for sure they would tell us we needed to go to the company who did the roof, they didn't. Ace came out a day that it was actually raining found where the leak was coming in at and fixed it that day. They didn't charge us no emergency service or anything. In this day we have found that finding companies that stand behind there work is like finding a needle in a haystack. Ace is a company you can rely on that always is willing to help out. pleased again ACE. You are a rare find and we're glad we find you. Thanks again!!!"

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.

Leaving vents open but closing doors in unused rooms will probably not save money on your energy bill. Closed doors prevent the natural flow of air throughout the home, which could reduce the efficiency of the overall HVAC system. They could also restrict airflow into and through the return vents, making the HVAC system less efficient.

Blower door tests are measured in a few different ways, but the most popular are air changes per hour (ACH) and cubic feet of air (CFM) moving through the house per hour. A good ACH score is less than 2ACH, but 1ACH is better. This means the house experiences a total air change within 60 minutes (for 1ACH). For 2ACH, there’s a complete change every 30 minutes, and so on. CFM scores are similar in that a lower score means less air change, and therefore less leakage.

Typically, triple-pane windows made with krypton gas filling are the most energy efficient. A window’s frame, glass, design, and installation all affect its energy efficiency. These windows, in particular, are designed highly effectively in terms of their ability to insulate.

Smart glass doesn’t use a lot of electricity, and you can expect a standard window to add between $1 and $2 per year to your electric bills. Smart glass is proof that energy-efficient windows work. Although your smart windows may consume a little energy to operate, they can save enough energy to offset the costs. If you’re concerned about the minimal bump to your electricity consumption, you can opt for smart tint, which doesn’t require electricity to work.
