Now that it is complete, it makes our garage look pretty - - imagine that! Robbie also installed a new toilet and determined cause of leak for the old one after having two other plumbing companies come out and be unable to resolve the issue over the last 5 years, leading us to not use the toilet. 24 hours later, no leaking and we have a working toilet. Interior door thresholds are usually attached using finish nails, and some contractors will also use construction adhesive under the threshold to hold it in place. Exterior door thresholds are more commonly screwed to prevent them from pulling up when people step on the raised edge on the outside of the door. Exterior doors also include caulk sealant on the inside to prevent water and air from seeping through.

Usually, french doors are more secure because they have a better locking system and a wider frame that allows for a more robust lock. Because sliding doors are just a big pane of glass with a single lock, they tend to be less secure. While you can get bars and other extra security features for your sliding door, a French door is more secure on its own.

You don’t need to shim both sides of a door, but it’s always a good idea. Wall framing is rarely perfectly plumb, and shims let you make minor adjustments to get your door perfectly level and plumb. This will ensure the door swings open and closes smoothly. You can also use shims on both sides of the door you’re installing or adjusting to center it in the wall opening.

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

You can use a variety of wood to build a barn door, but the most common options include 1-by boards and 2-by boards for the backing and the decorative boards on the front of the door. Softwoods like pine will save you some money and should hold up well, while hardwoods like maple and oak will stand up to more wear and tear. You could also build the backer out of plywood to minimize the cuts you need to make. Whatever you decide on, make sure the width of the wood is compatible with the mounting brackets you buy.
