"Mr Hilliard and his grandson did an exceptional job repairing our bluestone patio. In addition to their superior craftsmanship , Mr Hilliard had timely communication and quick completion of our project . I would definitely recommend LH Masonry for any masonry projects"
"I had an exposed aggregate sidewalk poured for my front entrance with various colored round stones. The sealer on top keeps the stones looking wet and beautiful. I added river stones on the sides and think my sidewalk is stunning!"
"Upon discovering that when our now four-year-old home was built, the support beams in our crawlspace had not been properly installed, nor had adequate ventilation been provided resulting in the stability of our home being in jeopardy. We began a search for a reputable company to address our issues. We found JES. We were fortunate to have Charles Logan as the representative to assess our needs. Charles was very thorough in determining what needed to be done. Zachary Conner and Michael Kimberlin were assigned to perform the work. They were very conscientious in taking the steps that were needed and keeping us well informed along the way. Charles, Zachary, and Michael were very professional, very pleasant, and respectful of our property. Thank you for putting our minds at ease and in making our home feel safe."
"Poured a slab for my garage install. Was cool when it was poured and didn't use enough calcium to help it cure . Had to stay until 4 am to do what they could. Came back next day to finish. Gave extra money to come back and remove debris. Never showed up so I rented a skid steer and cleaned up myself. Pad has low and hi spots in it. When if rains it creates a large pool on the carport and runs into my garage. They were very nice people but think they could have done a better job. Especially after I gave them a few hundred dollars extra."
"Bobby and the Fortress Techs were very professional, considerate, and thorough. The difference we feel from the crawl space insulation from before to after is amazing. Within just a day or two that musty smell in the house that was coming from the crawl space was gone! Bobby kept us informed throughout the entire process and finished the project on time. I would highly recommend Fortress Foundations Solutions to everyone; we were extremely satisfied with the outcome and the high quality customer service we received."
"The team took care of my issues that I had with my stone archway. They were efficient and very friendly and explained what they were working on. He didn't try to upsell anything and was honest and fair about the work."
"The installers were easy to work with and they did a great job. Our skylights look and work perfectly. This is very good company to deal with. They went out of their way to install the skylights that were of the best quality. The price was reasonable and working out the terms wasn't a problem."
"I needed stucco repair work on an old chimney (and other spots). Grady was meticulous and thoughtful on what approaches and materials would work. Throughout the project they allocated sufficient time for each treatment to cure and inspected the work before proceeding to the next step. Grady started the project with no money down and only required ongoing payments for materials until the project was well underway. The final payment was due only after they did a final inspection. Total project cost was also below other bids."
Inspect your brick, stone, and mortar joints every spring. The intense freeze-thaw cycles in Staunton cause significant deterioration, leading to spalling brick faces and displaced stones. You should also look for interior dampness or white salt deposits after heavy rainfall. If you notice mortar joint erosion deeper than a quarter inch, schedule masonry work immediately to protect your home from further structural damage and moisture intrusion.

Water entering directly through mortar joints or stone gaps requires masonry work. Conversely, leaks around window frames indicate a need for caulking or flashing repair. Stair-step cracks along mortar joints are standard masonry issues caused by settling. However, horizontal cracks in block foundation walls point to lateral soil pressure, requiring a structural engineering assessment rather than a standard brick repair for your Virginia home.

Homeowners frequently request historically compatible masonry work to match the distinctive regional brick styles found in local historic districts. Natural fieldstone and dry-stack stone patios, outdoor fireplaces, and fire pits are highly sought after to complement the scenic mountain views. Additionally, the hilly topography drives steady demand for sturdy stone or brick retaining walls to control erosion and enhance residential landscaping throughout VA.

The most common sign of failed masonry work in Staunton is the use of hard Portland cement on historic, soft brick. This incompatible material causes the surrounding original brick to spall and crack. You should also watch for mortar that crumbles within a few years, indicating the repair occurred during freezing temperatures. Additionally, recurring white salt deposits mean the contractor failed to correct underlying drainage issues.

Address the local climate by stopping masonry work during severe thunderstorms common to the Shenandoah Valley. You must use cold-weather protection if temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer, mist and shade materials to prevent rapid drying. For older homes, test for lead and asbestos before starting. Always secure the proper building permits to ensure the project meets all structural safety standards in Staunton.
