"Ricky provided mowing and edging for me for 8 years. Originally, I relied upon him for mowing and edging a large tree-filled lot in Springfield. For the past 5 years, he has, also, provided regular gardener services, has removed 8 dead trees and ground out stumps, provides winter clean up to include removing mountains of leaves, spring cleanup of flower beds and lawn, spring mulching, shrub pruning, and sprinkler system maintenance. Recently, he redesigned my back yard and reworked the flagstone around my flower beds. My yard always looks fantastic. Bahia grass is not difficult to grow, but you might need patience for this slow-growing grass. Whereas some grass species, like Bermuda grass, can take 1 to 2 weeks to germinate, Bahia grass can take two or three times as long, making it seem like it won’t grow. But again, once your Bahia grass is established, it requires little maintenance. Its deep root system makes it a very durable grass that can bounce back after freezes and droughts. 

Yellow patches, poor growth, or widespread weeds indicate a need for treatment. Soil testing can confirm nutritional deficiencies that require intervention.

You should not water your lawn every day, even in hot weather. For most lawns, watering one to three times per week is sufficient. It is best to water during a drought or when temperatures are high, but avoid watering in the middle of the day or if the temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The extreme heat will cause the water to evaporate before the soil can fully absorb it. The best time to water is in the early morning at dawn or in the early evening (between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) when the temperature is cooler.

During normal temperatures, you should mow about once per week. However, if your grass is distressed by extreme heat, you should avoid mowing it altogether. Wait until after an irrigation session or rainfall. That way, your grass will be good and hydrated before you mow. Remember, you should not mow the grass when it’s wet. Wait until it dries first.

Sometimes, pulling nutgrass can cause it to spread. If you do not discard the plant and rhizomes, the nutlets attached to the roots may each sprout. However, if you pull nutgrass repeatedly over the course of several weeks and discard the plant each time, it will weaken the plant significantly, eventually leading to its disappearance.
