"Ricky provided mowing and edging for me for 8 years. Originally, I relied upon him for mowing and edging a large tree-filled lot in Springfield. For the past 5 years, he has, also, provided regular gardener services, has removed 8 dead trees and ground out stumps, provides winter clean up to include removing mountains of leaves, spring cleanup of flower beds and lawn, spring mulching, shrub pruning, and sprinkler system maintenance. If you accidentally watered your grass too much during the winter months, try aerating your lawn to encourage absorption of the water into the soil and improve drainage. Dethatching your lawn can also help the solid recover from overwatering and encourage healthy root and stalk health in your grass.

Mowing at least once a week during the growing season is a good general rule. However, every lawn is different, and factors like frequent rain and fertilizer use can cause grass to grow faster, potentially requiring mowing as often as every four days. When you mow, always follow the 'one-third rule': never cut more than one-third of the grass blade's height at once, as this can weaken it and prevent it from taking in proper nutrients. For most grass types, the ideal height is around 2 to 3 inches, though some warm-weather grasses do better when kept shorter at about 1.5 to 2 inches.

To prepare your lawn for core aeration, water it the day before you aerate. (Alternatively, you can wait until it rains and aerate the following day.) Aerating after watering or a rainy day will make the process easier since you can penetrate moist soil better than dry soil. You should also flag your sprinklers so that you don’t accidentally hit them while aerating. If you have a lot of thatch buildup in your yard, you might need to dethatch your lawn before aerating as well.

You should wait about seven to 10 days after you top dress your lawn to mow. This will give the ground ample time to absorb the nutrients from the sand, topsoil, and compost, and help facilitate growth before you trim the existing grass. It’s also best to water the lawn frequently in the week or so after you top dress and before you mow.

There are tools known as “sprinkler donuts” that are specially designed to aid in cutting the grass around your sprinkler heads by protecting them from your mower or weed whacker. You can also use a pair of hand shears to do the job manually if you’re willing to get a little dirty.
