"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. They were receptive and patient with our ever-changing needs. Once we finalized our purchase, we received our cabinets within two weeks! The cabinets are very sturdy and the color is beautiful. The hinges and hardware are high quality. We are extremely pleased with AWD and would recommend them to any friends or family looking for good cabinets at a fair price."

"The good:
- The people were friendly for the most part
- They did good work in some ways
- Their subcontractors did good work
- They gave us a quartz counter top "for free" for our desk
- They did a couple extra things without charging us
- Everything looks good (if you don't look too closely)
The bad:
- I did not like the communication in the beginning, but I hoped, based on the reviews they got, that they would do a good job. I was disappointed with a lot of things - see below.
- I had to prepare my own detailed cost estimate (based on their difficult to understand e-mails) and get them to let me know if my estimate was correct or not. They would only give me a lump sum price and very little detail on what I was getting.
- They seemed to have never worked with the Cabinet Factory before. It was almost impossible to get any information about the cabinets we bought prior to signing a contract. Neither Get It Done (GID) or the Cabinet Factory wanted to talk to us about them. In the beginning I asked for no fiberboard and ended up with lots of fiberboard. Also, GID apparently does not know what fiberboard is - they were trying to tell me the kick-boards were not fiberboard (they are). The cabinets seem pretty low quality although at the time I was told by the Cabinet Factory that the cabinets I was getting were good quality and approaching the cost of the high end cabinets. One of the sliders in the pantry broke right away because there was too much weight. I never had this problem with my previous cabinets.
- They used wax crayon as paint in many locations on the cabinets. This is bad because it is not intended as paint, it is sticky, and wipes off easily.
- They told me it would be $100 more per fixture (about $1000) for LED under cabinet lighting. I still don't understand why they say it costs that much more. The lights they installed get very hot.
- There was very little attention to detail. They were going to stop the peninsula cabinets about 6 inches short of the end of the floor tile. It would have looked really silly - fortunately, I caught it in time and got them to adjust it.
- They put two joints in my crown molding about 12 inches apart and did a poor job with the joints. It looks very bad.
- The painting of the walls was bad. They missed lots of areas and they wanted me to mark all the areas they missed for them.
- They did not plan out the closet desk and shelves well at all. I told them I wanted a shelf for a TV, and they gave me shelves that weren't wide enough. Then they rigged it to work after lots of discussion.

"The job went very well. We had a total of 42 cabinet doors and drawers that Steve hoped to paint outside. Due to weather issues, he took them off site to paint. He and a fellow that works for him came on two days to prime and paint the boxes. They came a third day to rehang the cabinets and replace the hardware. The cabinets are painted MDF and some of the doors had areas where the paint had worn or chipped away allowing water to get in and swell the fibers. Steve did a good job of fixing these areas before painting...not an easy task as the fibers just want to flake away. I was pleasantly surprised since I had other painters and cabinet people tell me they couldn't be fixed and would have to be replaced. The cabinets look great and you have to really look hard to notice any difference between door that had the worse damage and the pristine cabinets.

I was also pleased that he fit me into his schedule to paint the outside of a double, second floor replacement window that we had installed prior to him starting the kitchen cabinet job.

My only suggestion to Steve would be to lay paper or a drop cloth from the door to the work site. Wiping up boot prints from the hardwood floor was really no big deal to me but it might be to someone else.

Steve and Josh were very nice guys, very considerate and easy to work with. I would hire S & S painting again in a minute."

"Belletto and I had some issues, with the work their tile person did.  However, the company has fixed and resolved every issue I have raised with them.  The issues are listed below, and I have to commend Belletto for resolving every issue I have come to them with.  I wish my experience would have seen less issues, but overall, my bathroom floors look great.

Our interaction with Belletto started with the work beginning 4 weeks after I purchased an Angieslist deal for the tile.  Dan did come a week or so to look at the job and quoted us another 350 to do the other bathroom because we wanted the tile under the cabinet in both bathrooms.  So, the cabinet had to be removed.  When work started, the installer didn't remove the cabinet and tiled around it instead.  Belletto had to have him pull it all up and restart the job.  The installer never did remove any of the trim in the first bathroom, but instead tiled up against it.  When he was done with this bathroom, we noticed damage to our tub from him putting the toilet in it.  The owner, Dan, did pay to have this repaired.  The second bathroom went a bit smoother but still wasn't without issues.  The installer put the vanity back and used a rubber coupling to connect the drain together rather than rebuilding the drain.  I went back through and replumbed the drain.  The tile around the toilet valve looks horrible.  We had issues with the way the installer cut the carpet, and Belletto had to send a separate guy out to repair the carpet.  We noticed cracks in the grout within one day in the second bathroom.  Every one of these issues has been resolved to my satisfaction my the company.  The overall experience wasn't perfect, and that is why I haven't given them and A.  However, they did resolve the issues.

"We had some cabinets that we needed raised to fit our new washer and dryer underneath.  Communication with Kevin Ryan and his office assistant (and spouse?) Annette were great throughout the transaction.  We always got immediate responses to our emails/phone calls.  On the morning of the job, Annette called to let us know what she was unable to reach Kevin but suspected he was delayed on the previous job.  She then sent an email that he would be an hour late, but almost canceled the call when we did not immediately acknowledge the message.  Fortunately Kevin got a hold of this before it happened and we were able to accommodate them starting an hour late.
Once we got that sorted out, everything went great.  Kevin brought an assistant and they did a great job of raising the cabinet without any problems.  The end result looks as if the cabinet was installed at that height from the beginning.  I asked them to also install two pedestals to our washer and dryer, which they cheerfully did.  They even put the machines back in their proper place after the job was done.
These guys are great for general handyman work.  Kevin kept getting calls during his work from Annette to coordinate upcoming service calls, so it sounds like he's in pretty high demand.  It's understandable given the quality of the work they did for us.  Other than the glitch with showing up an hour late, everything else was great!"

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

If you're looking for ways to save money on custom cabinets, there are a few ways to cut costs without sacrificing beauty. For starters, comparing door styles to choose the most cost-effective option is a great way to save money on the overall project.

In addition, choosing a common wood species versus an exotic one will lower the price. Woods like oak and hickory are often more affordable wood choices, and the same goes for knobs, pulls, and other finishes where picking a commonly available style can reduce costs.

We recommend installing wall cabinets first so the base cabinets aren’t in the way. This order also prevents damage to the base cabinets if you drop tools or materials when installing the upper cabinets.

There are three primary ways to attach upper kitchen cabinets to a wall, and installers may use more than one method at a time. The most common method is to drive screws through the back of the cabinets and into studs in the wall behind. Sometimes cabinets are glued to the wall with strong adhesive. Often a combination of screws and adhesive is desirable. The last way is by hanging the cabinets on hardware brackets that attach to the wall before cabinet installation.

If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, you can extend them higher, adding visual interest, privacy, and storage space to your kitchen. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you may want to extend the structure of the cabinets and install longer doors to make each individual cabinet taller, or you could add additional cabinets above the existing ones. Either option is cheaper and easier than installing entirely new cabinets.

Most cabinetry made for a garage will have special coatings and finishes built to withstand extreme heat and cold, moisture, pest damage, rusting, and dry rot. However, many homeowners have put their old kitchen cabinets in the garage, added a couple of fresh coats of paint, and use them for a while without too much wear and tear.
