"The whole experience was wonderful! Calvin Lee came to our home to measure the space and provided exactly what we asked for as our remodel design. Jason and his crew worked very hard to complete our kitchen as quickly as possible while doing excellent work. Christian always answered question and addressed concerns as the process went on. Jason followed up each evening to let us know what would happen next. They arrived on time each day worked full days. We got all new cabinets, flooring, countertops, lighting and paint. We couldn’t be happier with our new beautiful kitchen!"

"I would highly recommend Branner Builders. They did an outstanding job on the demolition. I had an old trailer and some trees that needed to be removed. The lot is now clear and ready for my new house. Thanks to Mike and his crew for a job well done!"

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"We needed a general contractor to take over from Clayton homes, to get our pre manufactured home installed on our land. To that end, I interviewed many general contractors, trying to get someone to say they'd take over the project, since Clayton homes refused to finish the project. Mr. Richards was the only person to step up and say that he'd do it, when no one else would. He even gave me a price estimate to take to our lender. That said, communicating with him was difficult. Apparently I'd caught him on vacation the first time I called, so it was a good one to two weeks after I'd started taking calls from other contractors before he phoned me back at all. And then when we met in person, I found him to be a little confrontational in his communication approach- brusque and laconic.. I'm pretty sure he was competent and knew what he was talking about, but even if the project had gone forward, I think we would have continued to have problems communicating with each other. Ultimately the project did not go forward, though that was not Mr. Richard's fault. This year, I've moved on to a different home building project entirely, and have been interviewing other builders, but have not called Mr. Richards back. That is because, as I found out, if you don't feel comfortable with your builder, and you have problems communicating with them from the start, it's not going to get any better once you get a few months in. I think it's really important that your home builder share your vision for your house, be able to see it finished in their minds, too; and maybe even get a little excited about it. Because if their heart isn't in it as a home builder, that will inevitably show in their work, and you won't end up being happy with what you pay for."

"After talking to and receiving quotes from 6 contractors we selected BK Contractors (Bret) for our remodel. The project included creating a new home office that needed to be insulated and sound proofed, a home theater, a kid’s playroom, half bath, and craft / arts center. Additionally, the hot water heater needed to be relocated with new plumbing lines run. Bret and his team were very professional and great to work with!!! Starting with the design and contracting process, Bret was easy to work with. He was more than happy to spend as much time as needed to help design the project. Like most people, we had a limited budge. Bret was able to offer options that allowed us to stay within our budge while maximizing our design. As for the contract, Bret’s scope of work and contract was thorough and left no doubt we select the right contractor. Within days of signing the contract Bret had the building permit in order and his guys were hard at work. The framing, electrical and plumbing rough-in were competed within a few weeks. All of his employees are very professional, polite, respect your home as if is it their home. At the end of each day, the work site was swept clean and the trash taken out. Throughout the entire project Bret was ALWAYS available and just a phone call away. I would absolutely recommend BK Contractors and will certainly use him again."

"The work was accomplished quickly, quietly and with a craftsmanship which is unexpected in today's market. The look of the stairs is simple, classic and very attractive, and structurally the work is absolutely solid and without a tremble or creaking underfoot. Impossible to imagine how anybody at any price could do better work. Mr. Painter is a master builder who produces exceptional work at a very reasonable price no matter if the job is large or small. We unreservedly recommend him."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Green homes are often more expensive to build, averaging around $200 per square foot compared to the $150 per square foot you’d spend to build a standard home. However, green homes can save you money on your utility bills by consuming less energy or creating energy using solar panels or wind turbines on-site. They’re more expensive to build, but they often end up costing less in the long run.

The average cost to renovate or remodel a home is $52,300, with most projects ranging from $19,500 to over $88,400. However, costs can vary significantly, from as low as $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 or more for a complete home remodel.

Several factors influence the total price, including:

  • Project Scope and Size: The extent of the renovations, whether it's a single room or the entire house.

  • Location: Geographic location affects labor and material costs.

  • Materials: The quality of materials chosen.

  • Room Type: Kitchen remodels ($14,500 - $70,000+) are generally more expensive than bedroom remodels ($1,500 - $5,500).

  • Other Factors: The time of year, complexity of the work, and any additions or expansions.

On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $15 and $60 for standard projects and up to $150 for luxury renovations.

Examples of specific project costs include:

  • Basement remodel: ~$20,200

  • Garage remodel: ~$27,900

  • Loft conversion: ~$20,200

  • Disability accommodation remodel: ~$4,300

  • Major home repairs: ~$11,700

If you are financing the project, note that some loan programs, like the FHA 203(k), may require a minimum project cost (e.g., $5,000) and will necessitate a home appraisal and professional cost estimates. Using a home renovation cost estimator can also help you budget for your project.

Custom homes can take an average of 18 months to build, mainly due to the lengthy design process, and most projects take somewhere between 12 and 24 months. When you work with the right custom home builders near you, they can help you map the road ahead and understand what can speed up or delay the timeline. Choosing locally available materials, for example, can speed things up without losing that customized touch.

How long it takes to build a log cabin depends on a variety of factors, including its size and design, and whether or not you have to clear the land. Construction can take a few weeks for a prefab log cabin on an established site, but up to eight or nine months for a custom cabin on undeveloped land. In comparison, the timeline to build a house is typically four to 12 months.

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.
