"Just noticed this degrading review, and I am surprised that Angie's List allowed it to be published. I never performed any work for this customer, but I did spend time consulting, offering suggestions for them, and giving them multiple hours of me working up an estimate for their job (like I do for so many people). Needless to say, I am truly confused as to how someone would take the time to write this, and spill their unfortunate frustrations out on me and my company, Richards' Homes. I will be calling to straighten out this false accusation after the holiday. I am truly sorry they felt the necessity to write a bad review, when NO work was performed for them whatsoever."
We had searched for almost a year for a reputable home builder for our forever home. We met with several great and reputable builders, but many were over our budget or had conditions such as requiring us to stay away for a period of time, or allowing them to make decisions without our input, that we just could not live with. We found Daniel Richards on Angie's list. When we met with him and explained our new home plans (which many builders thought were not possible or had 'never been done that way before'), Daniel said we would work together to make it happen. And that is exactly what he did. He worked with us through the whole process . He communicated with us through email and phone as we carried on with our busy work schedules. But, we wanted to be involved, and Daniel allowed us to be as involved as we felt we needed to be, sometimes slowing down the progress so that we could make informed decisions, but in the end, getting the custom home of our dreams.
We were also very impressed with the quality of Daniel's subcontractor team - the framing and trim guys (Thompson's Home Improvement) were absolutely outstanding. We couldn't believe how fast they installed the siding, built the deck, framed our windows and doors, installed custom cabinets and trimmed out the home interior! Everything that Ronnie and Bryan did was professionally done and top quality. We can't thank them enough. The wallboard guys did an amazing job, and the paint 'guy' was very meticulous and detailed. The electrician was a God Send (Halbach Electric) - working weekends to put in the endless number of sconces and pot lights up on our twenty feet high cathedral ceilings. Through all of his work, the electrician managed to find time to call us and give us advice on our lighting, like our kitchen island and spot lights over our sink - he thought of every detail and because of him as his crew, our home looks beautiful. The plumbing was a difficult job, given the layout and material we used for our home, but Gene's plumbing came through. ...and many more great subs....
Daniel's professionalism and kind demeanor helped us successfully get through this daunting construction project. Our custom home was a challenge but we could not have built it without Daniel Richards and his subcontractor team.
"I do appreciate the open communication we had! It was a pleasurable experience!"
"I really appreciate your review! We have always kept up on communication and I strife to do this with all customers! I am astonished that some use Angie's List for their sole communication/concerns by posting it in a review! Thank you! for your needed support!!"
Started out well, but miscommunication occurred frequently. A lot of the work was sub-contracted out and some of the work wasn't done well, the right way or even completed.
Small window had to be moved a couple of inches and instead of putting any siding or anything over the exposed wood it was just left exposed. Contractor complained because we wanted the bathroom painted two colors and said he wasn't aware we wanted two colors.
Sub-contractors for removing/re-installing drywall and the plumbers did excellent work. Painting isn't great for a professional job.
Communication issues led to workers showing up on days we didn't expect, then not showing up on days we expected, so that wasn't a pleasant experience.
"Well, I really don't know what to say as I already responded and then customer changed comments and ratings. I was always told that you can't please everybody, I always try. I am just flabbergasted and amazed about this! Bathroom remodels do take long. We started during the Holidays of 2014 and finished in January. There was a lot of communication issues! showing up over a dozen times with no way of getting in because of the customer forgetting to leave a key out or the door open was a major one. We @ Richards' Homes, always kept informing of the going on. So, to say the least, with the customer letting me know that it was a job well done at the completion, only to give this review 6 months later, kind of shocked me."
"You have been very nice to talk with and appreciate the opportunity! Thanks for the river lot access!! Still need to get there."
We hired Daniel based on reviews he had on Angie's List and we were not disappointed! We're blown away at how great he is. He and the sub-contractors he used were all very professional, respectful of our home and property, timely and just a great group of tradesman. We now have people we can count on for any of our future needs. The designer he sent us to was just what we needed, and extremely patient with us thru all the decision making.
What was done?
We blew out a wall between the kitchen/dining room and our living area, moved and replaced both a sliding glass door and window (the window was replaced with a larger window) which necessitated the removal of the vinyl siding and sheathing, tore out all the cabinets, fixed a bad section of subfloor, then rebuilt everything putting in even more cabinets, an island, lots of lighting (including ribbon under cabinet LED lights - simply great!) Through it all Daniel kept us informed about what was going on, what was coming next and did a great job of tracking and resolving any issues that came up. He did the new cabinet install himself and did meticulous work getting the cabinets to align properly to give a seamless appearance.
When all was done, the price we paid was what he proposed in the beginning - no surprises.
Would we hire Daniel again in the future - in a heartbeat!!!
If I can figure where and how to upload a picture of the final product, I'll do that.
Thank you Daniel, Angie's List, and all the others that submitted reviews that took us to Daniel!
The kitchen remodel was the original reason I called Mr. Richards. I had actually checked with 4 different options and chose one other one before him. The other one treated me like an idiot and after 2 weeks of dealing with that, I decided to give Richards homes a chance. I am so glad I did. Mr. Richards is a very nice and respectable man. He hired professional
people to do any work he couldn't do himself and fixed any imperfections that we noticed. Anything that we weren't happy with,
which wasn't much, he would talk to us and figure out the best solution to solve the problem.
The original Kitchen was very cramped (narrow and long) with a pantry that took up a lot of space. The stove was in the corner and when you opened it it scratched the wall. The whole room only had 2 electric outlets for normal use, one for the stove, microwave and one for the refrigerator. It also only had maybe 10 sqft of counter top space. Mr. Richards used my rough draft of a remodel and took it to a cabinet/granite place to send me a draft of what we could do with our kitchen. After a few adjustments we were happy with what we could do.
In the remodel, we decided to demo the pantry, swap the stove and dishwasher, and make the counters make a U shape on the right wall that came out into the doorway making a bar. We also made that bar extend into the dinning room so we could put bar stools under it and have a breakfast bar. This gave us over 35sqft of counter top space.
When the pantry was removed we noticed the light that was in the pantry would be in a weird place. Mr. Richards asked his electrician to tie it into the original kitchen switch and center the light with the original light so we would have double the light in the kitchen. The electrician also wired the whole room up to code, which gave us 7 outlets plus one out on the end of the bar. He also rewired the stove, microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator.
We also had to have our floors redone in the kitchen. The kitchen had tile, over 2 layers of linoleum, over hardwood flooring. He stripped the floors back to the hardwood, which turned out to be some expensive pine flooring, and had a professional come in to sand, polish and reseal the floors.
The roof project was actually added late to Richards Homes, because I had another company lined up to do this and they backed out on me at the last minute. The other company actually told me that it wasn't worth the time to fill out the renovation paperwork to do this job. They told me this 3 weeks before I closed on my new house. I contacted Mr. Richards (who was already lined up to remodel my kitchen) and asked him if there was anyway he could do my roof for me. In less than a week he
had everything worked out to have my roof done and for $1000 cheaper. I couldn't ask for anything more.
So we decided to go ahead and redo the roof. Which only had about 2 years left on it. Mr. Richards didn't fix this himself, since the roof is very steep. He had a very reliable and cheap company that he trusted to do this work for me. The guys that came to do the job were very nice and worked really hard. They picked up all there trash before they left every day. They had the old shingles torn off and had the new ones on with drip edge in less than 3 days. Mr. Richards decided to leave me the left over drip edges(3-4 pieces) and 3 extra bags of shingles, which will be really nice if i ever have to fix anything down the road. It will also help because I'm gonna have to redo the garage roof one day.
We are glad we decided to give Richards' Homes, LLC a chance. The roof turned out great and our kitchen came out even better than we had hoped for. Mr. Richards was more than willing to make sure we were happy with everything. He even let me borrow his wet tile saw so I could install a glass/stone back splash. I would highly recommend this company to anyone.
I personally did a lot of the design work, particularly with the windows, with the design engineer filling in the structural details. I think this approach saved us a lot of money, plus it gave us exactly what we wanted.
Dan is reliable and punctual himself, but also did a great job hiring reliable, experienced subcontractors -- very important considering that they do most of the actual work. I would certainly hire Dan again (and, in fact, we did).
The work (to me) was done quickly and in a quality manner....
