"I found Prestige right here on Angieslist and sent them a message to set up an appointment to come out and give us a quote. They responded promptly and sent a rep to come and take a look at our very unfortunate backyard. It is so steep back there, it's unusuable. We weren't sure anyone would even want to do the job of building a deck back there, but he seemed pretty unphased. So we figured it would cost a fortune and to our surprise, our quote we got via email was really reasonable, especially with our crazy backyard. I was grateful! Once contracted to do the job, they actually started on the deck building a day early and worked in over 100 degree weather for about 5 days. Yup, they even finished earlier than we expected too. I was impressed. Everything went really smoothly, passed inspection from the City of Fredericksburg and we're all good to go. Now, we have a lovely deck to enjoy our lovely view. Finally, we can use our outdoor space! Thanks, Prestige! We would hire them again or recommend them to anyone who wants a deck built in the area. Reliable company. "Doug Vickstrom did end up completing the project and stayed on budget. And I like my new shed/goat barn. But unfortunately his rudeness and lack of communication skills overshadowed the good. It was a stressful time. We agreed on a completion date before signing the contract. He even told me the project would only take 2 weeks to complete. But he drug his feet, only working a handful of days, and finally finished 2 months late! So the “On Time” part of his slogan is a lie."

In most areas, dock builders need some type of license. In some states, only a general construction license might be necessary, while a marine construction license is required in others. You can check online to see which is mandatory in your area, and then you can use Angi’s contractor licensing tool to make sure the company holds the proper license. Since dock construction is inherently dangerous, confirm with your builder that they are fully insured for everyone’s protection.

The most significant factor in knowing whether to repair or replace your dock is the extent of the damage and its age. If you have minor cracks on a few boards and the dock is less than 15 years old, it'll likely be worth repairing the damaged part. However, it's time to replace this essential water feature if you have significant damage, such as rotting wood in multiple areas, warps or cracks in the dock supports, or a damaged foundation.

Here are a few other considerations before you build, even if you're convinced you're in compliance with the law:

  • Are you damaging the environment? Bodies of water are often delicate ecosystems, and building a dock can be destructive and disruptive to the wildlife.

  • Are you blocking access? Lots of people like to use a lake, so you need to make sure your dock doesn't block public access to the water.

  • Can you enclose the dock? Just because you can build a dock doesn't mean you can build any dock you want. Some areas don't allow enclosed docks, for example.

  • Do you need to follow any specific rules or guidelines? Check with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management for any guidelines you’ll need to follow, including size and type restrictions.

Bulging walls, cracks in the seawall's top or side, and the appearance of a seawall "pulling away" are all signs that you need repairs or reconstruction. The area around the seawall can also provide clues. For instance, you may notice water bubbling over in areas of your yard if your seawall has holes or cracks. The soil around the seawall may also appear to be sloping or sinking.

Boat docks need maintenance every year. Get an inspection at the end of each warm weather season, and remove the dock from the water if possible (if it’s made of wood) when not in use. You can also treat the wood to lessen the impact of moisture damage.
