"I had a rotten window footing from a leaky window air conditioner. Brad took out the window air-conditioner, tore out the old wood and replaced the trim all around the window, caulked and painted it. He was on time, he was efficient, and he did a good job. I would recommend him without reservation, and I will definitely be calling him again, as needed."

"Very very pleased with Mr. Handyman. Had a section of exterior trim that had come loose in the high winds we experienced recently. It was banging on the side of my house and was threatening to do additional damage. After calling, emailing, etc., several other handyman services (and getting no response) I discovered that I had saved Mr. Handyman URL on my laptop at work. Gave them a call and arranged to perform the repair a couple hours later. Arriving home 15 minutes before the agreed upon time, Duane was already there. He repaired the trim in less than 30 minutes. Very professional. Straightened up after completion. I will definitely use again!"

"It went great they arrived on time. They removed my carpet in less than an hour. Mr. Barett worked with when it came to getting additional supplies and still was able to complete the job before lunch time. Cleaned up after the job and was very professional. I will be recommending them to others.

"We booked Mr. Fernando and his nephew and they were very courteous and professional with the repairs. They even cleaned up after the job was done. Our dining room ceiling is beautiful and better looking than before. We would definitely hire him again for future projects. Thank you from the Prices."

Small jobs welcome

"Bernie has done several projects at our home and has done a fantastic job on each one. He has installed a storm door, replaced a sink drain, built a gate for our front porch, installed, flooring in our attic, and even repaired a joist in our crawlspace. He has been friendly, accommodating, and has a wealth of knowledge on countless home improvement needs. Highly recommend."

Caulking Services questions, answered by experts

In Chesapeake, most handyman projects involving cosmetic updates like painting or minor repairs under $1,000 generally do not require permits. However, if your project includes structural changes, electrical or plumbing work, or constructing sheds over 256 square feet, permits are required. Always verify requirements with the Chesapeake Department of Development and Permits, as regulations can change, and ensure your contractor is licensed per the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.

Helpful?

Chesapeake’s humid, coastal climate means handyman service projects often need to address moisture control, mold prevention, and storm readiness. Spring and fall are best for exterior home repairs, while summer’s heat favors indoor maintenance. Frequent storms may require timely roof inspections and gutter cleaning. Regular upkeep of metal fixtures and wood surfaces helps combat corrosion and rot, both common issues in Chesapeake.

Helpful?

After finishing mailbox repair, notify your local Chesapeake post office to update your delivery records. Verify that your house numbers meet local visibility standards for emergency responders. If your project involved digging near the road, restore the right-of-way to its original condition. For homes in HOA communities, secure final approval to close the project. Finally, monitor the post base for stability after heavy Virginia rainstorms, especially if you live in a flood-prone area.

Helpful?

You should combine mailbox repair with other exterior projects to streamline the process. Chesapeake requires permits for right-of-way work, so bundling this with driveway or landscaping updates consolidates your applications. Submitting a single request to your HOA also reduces approval wait times. Schedule these projects between March and May or September and October to avoid extreme Virginia weather, which impacts concrete curing times. Bundling projects also secures faster scheduling with local professionals.

Helpful?

For handyman projects in Chesapeake, sourcing materials from local suppliers helps ensure compliance with city building codes and suitability for the area's humid climate. Prioritize weather-resistant lumber and corrosion-resistant fasteners for exterior work. Consult with Chesapeake building inspectors or the Department of Development and Permits for guidance on approved materials, especially for roofing, siding, or electrical supplies to meet local code requirements.
