"This project went very well. When our old shower was removed, the contractor discovered not only a hidden old stairway, but a leak from the floor above. Accessing it to repair was difficult, but it and a second leak were remedied and a disaster averted. Installation of the new shower was demanding, as like all old houses, ours has its quirks and odd measurements and angles. The remodeling---a new shower, removal of an old tub and installation of new cabinetry---was excellent. MJL's Mike Laudicina and every one of his helpers did meticulous work. And all were a pleasure to do business with. We would hire MJL again, and readily recommend them."

"Outstanding!!! By far one of the finest installations that I have had performed in my home over the last 30 years. Eric who performed the installation is a master at recessed light installation. After a brief survey of my existing lighting and my new requirements he went right to work. He made only two (2) 6"x 6" drywall ceiling cuts to complete the 11 light installation. I envisioned that my ceiling would require major drywall work when he finished and my requirement to hire a drywall contractor. In fact he did such great job in his ceiling entry work I completed the drywall patch work myself. He took advantage of my existing wiring to tie all lights in and replaced existing switches with ones that provided a dimmer capability. If you are thinking of having recessed LED lighting installed and don't hire Murphy Family Services and Eric specifically you're missing out on a great opportunity to spruce up your home with a quality lighting job (Oh! don't forget that you have to buy the LED lights and switches but at today's prices they're a real bargain. Extremely pleased, Joe Vercellone"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.
