"Member Comments: Once we decided with Abry Brothers, setting up installation date was smooth, they even took care of calling the utility companies to have everything marked off.

On work date, they arrived on time - slightly earlier, which is great.  Staff was uniformed. They had a foreman who introduced himself and was always working with the staff.

Had a total of 55 exterior pilings put in, with another 35 on the interior.  A lot of digging and plant removal.

They had some issues with a water line, which they quickly addressed.  Only caused the water to be shut off for a few hours.

Some very minor damage inside (sheetrock cracking) from the leveling, however they did forewarn me about this.

When completed they did not finish replanting the landscaping.  I was told they would come back the next day, even though all the work was completed (too dark to continue).  Next morning we left for work and returned later to find that someone did come back and replant.  There are some plants that we will have to replace, however they did tell us this could very well happen and they do outline this in the contract.  Not a big issue consider the magnitude of the work.

Received lifetime warranty for the work completed.

They really went out of their way to leave everything as clean as possible which we thought would be next to impossible with all the work they did.

Very happy would Abry Brothers.  Would recommend them."

"It went really well, better than expected. Mr. King was great to work with as he provided me several options for water proofing (for the future) and he installed a sump pump which is what I needed as the first step. He was on time, cleaned up after the job was done (and during) and wanted to make sure we were very happy with his work. I waited to do a review because I wanted to see how the sump pump worked after rain. We have had a couple of good rain events since it was installed and we heard it working and doing its job. The unit is a little loud, but knowing it is working and moving the water out of the crawlspace is all that matters to me."

"Not good. The water leaks had caused black mold that had to be repaired. When repairs were completed 3 months later, the valves still leaked from the stem when turned on. It was past 60 days so I had to pay another $100 service fee to have the water leaks fixed. He tightened the packing and quoted $350 to replace the valves. Sheesh."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install a water softener, including the system and labor, is approximately $1,500. However, the total price can range widely from $600 to $6,000. For some complete systems, the cost may be between $800 and $2,500. Labor for the installation typically costs between $150 and $1,000.

The final price is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System type, capacity, and complexity

  • Home size and household water demands

  • Water hardness levels

  • Accessibility of the installation site and the extent of plumbing work required

  • Whether new electrical work is needed

  • The professional hired and any local permit costs

You can install a water softener system by turning off the water supply, draining the water, and then connecting your device to the waterline. Next, you’ll fill your tank with the recommended amount of salt or brine (whichever your unit calls for; be sure to read the instructions). Turn the water supply on and check for leaks. You can opt to let your water run for a few minutes, then test it using strips.

The process of inspecting your water softener system is similar.

Selecting the right system depends on testing your water to understand the contaminants present and considering your household's water usage and specific needs, such as removing specific contaminants.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

You should not use a water conditioner with a water softener because a water conditioner changes the chemistry of the water and causes the ion exchange in a softener to be ineffective. Choose a water softener if you have hard water or well water, and use a water conditioner if you need to remove certain contaminants.
