Small jobs welcome

"All went well. I had met Nick about a year ago when he painted the house next door and noted his good reputation on Angie's List. I also learned he's booked about two months in advance. Several months ago he painted our master bedroom and removed the wall paper, textured the walls and painted a half bath. I contacted him on these jobs and he visited for an estimate and discussion of the work. I broke the work into two jobs as it assisted us in preparing for his work. The first job was $2,300 and the second was $1,000. I paid $1,200 on the second job as some other work was added. I furnished all paint and Nick furnished caulk, fill, and all other needed materials. Nick prefers Sherwin Williams quality paint. He scheduled both jobs about two months out at the estimate visit. Nick, and his assistants, Jeremy and Eric, are pleasant to work with. They arrived very timely, are neat, clean, professional and organized. The kitchen received two coats of paint due to the new texture. All trim was oil based paint. Balance of paint was one coat but with close color match."

"2 different crews performed the job. Ignacio and his crew performed the pier and beam job. The work was done in a timely manner, all the crew worked very hard each day they were on the job. Ignacio went above and beyond while having to deal with rain and plumbing leaks (yes, Ignacio fixed the leaks). Robert and his crew worked on the porch slab. They were all professional and kept us informed during the various stages of the job. We also had our sidewalk repaired, thank you Josh. We would highly recommend Foundation Support Specialists. We are very satisfied with their work and all their staff. They also cleaned up the job site and removed all debris."

Customers say: True professional

"Ruben is friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable in both residential and commercial, but subcontracts some work. He did a descent job building a few interior office walls and correcting most of his mistakes, but is best suited working in areas not occupied. You?ll want to provide sketches with measurements to ensure no miscommunication (e.g., exact light placement/height). The statement of work should specify how the area should be prepped for construction/painting, what constitutes a finished project (e.g., baseboards included or not, what will be painted), and how the area will be restored. Our main issue was lack of proper construction/paint dust mitigation and covering floors/walls/ceiling/furniture with the right materials. He caused damage to the flooring (carpets and wood), baseboards, and one of the sprinkler heads. The latter being at least $1200 to repair. He tried to clean, but it was too much. So he wrote off the unpaid balance to help reimburse us."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

With foundation walls, the slab on grade and force at the top of the wall is resisted by flooring. With retaining walls, the force at the top of the wall is not resisted.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

There are contractors specifically trained in the design and construction of retaining walls. Retaining wall contractors are skilled at dealing with the soil on your property and assessing what kind of drainage should be installed. They will recommend the best materials to use for the project and can handle the processing of permits by local authorities.
