"Working with Ash was a pleasure. He was very open, honest, trustworthy and courteous. Ash was able to explain a lot of the processes. he looked at foundation bids that I had, and recommended which companies had great plans and which companies were just out to sell extra unneeded foundation support. I would recommend Ash to anyone needing an Engineer for foundation issues, structural issues and for test and reports needed for insurance purposes"

"I would have given an A due to the quick response and the work performed. All were very good - on time and very professional. The outcome was a report from an engineer - we were told the report will be very detailed (the inspection part was very detailed), but the synopsis and recommendations were very very basic with hardly any value at all. As a home owner, I am aware and know the basic information shared. The price paid was not worth the money at all."

"Kamal was extremely helpful in surveying the structural integrity of our dock. He went through immense detail to outline everything that needed to be repaired and was very efficient in getting it back to me for our broker in the sale of our home. I highly recommend Alaska engine engineering!"

"We recently contracted with BSA Structural Engineering for an onsite evalution of a fireplace structure to determine if it was load-bearing. Coordinating the appointment was a breeze and we were quickly scheduled to meet with the owner himself the following day. Mr. Adhikari was very punctual, courteous and patiently answered a multitude of questions we had. He conducted a thorough inspection of the structure that included the interior, exterior and two trips into the attic. Mr. Adhikari then provided us with great information along with some drawings on how to accomplish our project. He was very knowledgeable and put our minds at ease with regards to moving forward on our project. I highly recommend BSA Structural Engineers to anyone seeking structural engineering advice. We could not be more pleased- from the very beginning of scheduling the appointment with their friendly assistant Sofia to our dealings with Mr. Adhikari- this was a very pleasant and professional experience."

"Willie is very professional and knows his stuff. He visited us several times as we planned the project, and he and his mason Polo consulted with us on our various options. It took about two weeks to complete. Some delays were due to letting block walls cure overnight before they could get any higher. Regardless, they finished in the estimated time. There were some sections we were unsure of because a previous owner had covered up the basement walls with beadboard. After uncovering, they honestly advised us that there was no major damage there and proceeded to carefully replace the cripple wall supports with larger and stronger beams. They did great work, were very pleasant to work with, and we would hire them again!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Structural engineers typically conduct inspections during a home sale or renovation, looking for signs of structural damage in various structures throughout the building, such as load-bearing walls, joists, beams, roofing trusses, foundations, and chimneys. Some of the warning signs that structural engineers check for include:

  • Dry rot

  • Infestation

  • Shifting or cracking foundations

  • Erosion

  • Water damage

  • Sagging, shifting, or damaged walls, ceilings, or roofing support

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Absolutely, as it ensures designs are viable and won’t compromise structural integrity.

Dormers must be able to bear the load of their own construction and the added window. The style of the dormer, however, will determine where the weight loads onto your home's structure. A gable dormer bears the weight on the side walls whereas a shed dormer bears it on the front walls.

A split-level home is one that has several staggered floors connected by short staircases, while a split floor plan separates the primary bedroom from the rest of the bedrooms. Split floor plans are most often found in single-story homes, while split-level homes are always at least two stories.
