"In response to a request for someone to repair my Weber gas grill thru Angi’s list, I was contacted by Plano Masonry and Chimney. I was told they mainly do fireplaces and do not provide this service but recommended Jeffrey. Jeffrey contacted me within 30 min, on the Saturday afternoon before Memorial Day! A couple hours later, the grill was fixed and the brats were cooking! The owner of Plano Masonry and Chimney was awesome, going out of his way to help us. Jeffrey communicated his ETA, kept me informed throughout the repair process, which was quick and successful. He was very personable and we felt comfortable having him in our home. It was reassuring to know there are people willing to go out of their way to help, especially on a holiday weekend! Because of them, we celebrated on Memorial Day the way we had hoped."

"Mr. Pintor personally came out and assessed the work needed. Quoted a very fair price and performed the work. The color match was very important factor and he matched it perfectly! We are very pleased with the results and his principals. Will definitely trade with Pintor Masonry again. I highly recommend him for your project. He even came back following week to review the work. Very impressive as I don't know anyone else that does a follow up visit."

"Casey came to check out the leak I had in my roof. The problem was from a hot water heater vent that was left after converting to a tankless. Strong winds from storms moved the vent and broke the seal causing the leak. Gave me two choices…remove the old vent and patch roof or shorten the vent on the roof to cut down on the wind moving it, and sealing it. Went with the latter…had it done immediately…correctly and at a great rate. No leaks even with the recent storms. Very happy"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should seal and cap an unused chimney to protect it from damage. Sealing the structure helps prevent moisture damage, which can lead to issues like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. Capping the chimney is also crucial to prevent blockages, damage from invasive critters, and downdrafts, while still allowing for proper air ventilation to manage moisture. For the best results, consult a chimney professional to select the right type of chimney or flue cap for your home. It's also wise to continue with annual chimney inspections to maintain the structure's integrity.

There are six main choices of fireplace inserts: wood-burning, gas, propane, pellet, electric, and coal. Coal fireplace inserts aren’t as popular as they once were because burning coal emits a lot of carbon monoxide. Any fireplace insert will require proper supervision, and it’s a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in the room for added safety.

A chimney liner is a good thing to invest in regardless of if you have issues or not. Chimney liners increase the safety of your fireplace. Without a chimney liner, the gasses that get emitted during burning could eventually damage the masonry and create a major fire hazard in your home.

A fireplace's lifespan varies significantly depending on its type, the quality of construction, the materials used, and how well it is maintained. On average, you can expect a fireplace to last between 10 and 30 years, with many homeowners experiencing major issues after about 20 years.

Here's a breakdown by type:

  • Gas Inserts: Typically last 10 to 25 years with proper maintenance.

  • Electric Fireplaces: Have a lifespan of up to 20 years.

  • Traditional Brick Fireplaces: Can last for centuries, but require ongoing maintenance and repairs, such as tuckpointing.

This happens when condensation forms due to your room temperature being lower than its dew point. You can clean the glass with a combination of baking soda, vinegar, and warm water to wipe away the fog from the doors.
