They carefully demolished and carried away my old driveway, laid wood forms and rebar. They came the next business day after the rain passed to pour my driveway. Yes, concrete can set in rain, but it’s best if you pour concrete 4 to 8 hours before any rain to ensure it won’t impact its strength and appearance. Exposure to heavy rain during the early stages (the first 48 hours after pouring) can significantly reduce the structural integrity of the concrete. Over time, cracking is more likely due to softer concrete. 

Placing either a layer of mixed-size gravel or a paver base under your crushed concrete driveway is a good idea. The smaller pieces will compress and prevent the larger pieces of concrete from driving into the soil below, helping to avoid sinking over time under the weight of vehicles. For added protection from sinking and weeks, you can also install a heavy-duty weed liner beneath the gravel or paver base. Just be sure to use a permeable material to avoid drainage problems.

Visible cracks, scaling, flaking, and uneven surfaces indicate a bad concrete job. Additional signs vary depending on the project. You may notice poor drainage or even exposed rebar. Quality issues result from using the wrong concrete, rushing the work, or inexperienced workers completing the job.

The method used to repair cracks in your concrete driveway will depend on the extent of the damage, but the most common method for small cracks is to use a driveway resurfacing compound. This solution is either cementitious or made of polyurethane, and it will seal the crack and make your driveway appear undamaged. 

For more severe cracks, you will likely need to hire a professional driveway repair service. They can use mudjacking, epoxy injections, partial driveway replacements, or a combination of these to fix more serious cracks in your concrete driveway and to prevent recurring issues.

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. However, it does get unpleasantly hot in the summer and requires more maintenance than concrete.
