"Asphalt Construction of Gainesville did an outstanding job on my driveway. They transformed an old mess of ruts, gravel and chunks of concrete into an attractive and smooth solid surface. It took only two days. Buddy, his dad, and the rest of the team were punctual, professional, and great to work with. They have all the equipment necessary to do an outstanding job, and you can tell by the way they work that they have plenty of experience. They left my property looking cleaner than when they arrived, and even salvaged some existing material to create a parking pad for my RV. Even with regular maintenance, most driveways don’t last much longer than 30 years. Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues. 

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.
