The purpose of a septic tank is to allow solid wastes to separate out of the wastewater using time, gravity, and other natural biological processes. A septic smell may be harmful because sewer gas is dangerous depending on the exposure amount and length of time. Sewer gas is made up of multiple gases, including hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. Some of these gases, like hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, are toxic to humans and can be fatal in high concentrations or long exposures.

Because well water is not artificially filtered or pre-treated, it may contain contaminants. As a result, it’s possible for well water to damage pipes based on what is in the water. How do you set your well’s pressure tank? All you need to do is first drain the tank of water and find the pressure switch. Remove the switch cover and adjust the switch with a wrench—clockwise to increase water pressure, and counter-clockwise to reduce it. Each complete turn of the nut on the switch should equal 2.5 psi. Once this is done, replace the switch cover. All that’s left is to adjust the pressure of the tank itself using an air compressor and a tire gauge to support the new setting.

The efficacy of a drain field depends on a wide variety of factors, though a well-maintained one can last as long as 40 or 50 years. Of the different types of septic tanks on the market, concrete and plastic tanks tend to last the longest—upwards of 40 years if they’re pumped regularly—while steel tanks have a tendency to rust over time and may need to be replaced after 15 or 20 years.
