"I hired Leaf Gutters to remove a section of gutter where the fascia had rotted and needed to be repaired. Leaf Gutter contracted with a roofing company to cut out the bad parts of the fascia and plywood on the roof. The roofing company performed their work by adding new plywood, shingles and caulking to repair the roofing and fascia. The roofing contractor did an excellent job repairing my fascia and roof.. Leaf Gutter cleaned all of the gutters around my home and added drip line flashing behind all of the gutter so water will not cause damage in the future. They identified an area on my house where the previous gutter company had missed adding a down spout. Leaf Gutter added this new down spout at no additional charge. The crew sent to my home was very professional, hardworking and knowledgeable. I would recommend Leaf Gutter for new gutter installations and repairs."

"Had gutters along with the leaf blaster installed. Quick process, transparent pricing, and friendly and helpful staff... they guided me to affordable options to cover what I needed. The job, from quote to finish, took less than a week; installation took an afternoon and they were able to complete it while I was at work, no trace of them having been there except for lovely new gutters. Work has been great, and adequately diverting rain flow from my foundation and garden beds"

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

On average, gutters need to be replaced every 20 years. Unprotected gutters in more extreme weather conditions are more prone to breaking and may need to be replaced sooner. Meanwhile, proper maintenance can extend your gutter’s life span even further. That said, proper installation, gutter hangers to provide additional support, and gutter guards or helmets all play an important role in how long your gutters last.

Calcium chloride does not do significant damage to gutters when used properly and in moderate amounts. If you use too much too frequently, it could eventually cause corrosion in your gutters. Rock salt will harm your gutters, though.

There are a handful of things you can look for to determine if you need to pay for gutter repairs, including the following:

  • Water leaking from the underside of your gutters during rainfall

  • Visible gaps between your gutters and your roof

  • Frequent issues with gutters overflowing or holding standing water

  • Gutters that sag or pull away from the house

  • Water damage to soffits, fascia boards, or other building materials

  • Mold growth on your exterior walls

  • Soil erosion underneath your roof overhang

  • Foundation leaks or inward bowing of foundation walls

Yes, it’s possible to replace only one section of a gutter, and it’s a common repair. Often, a tree limb will damage a gutter on one side of the house, or constant weather will cause early corrosion. Gutters are often joined together with couplings that are easy to remove and swap out. For this reason, some homeowners will purchase extra gutters when they install them to have spare sections to use for replacement later.

Buried downspouts can freeze during cold weather as cold water runs through them. If you’ve discovered your downspouts are frozen, you can carefully pour hot water down the top of the downspout to defrost them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to dig your downspout back up. Avoid trying to break the ice from the exterior using a hammer as this can cause cracks and damage to your downspout.

To avoid freezing the future, consider adding a heating cable to the exterior, which can adjust heat based on the surrounding temperature.
