"We hired Marlin Edinger, after a small job he did for us this past Spring, to remove a bathtub and sliding glass doors, enlarge that area into a modern shower stall with glass doors, all new tile walls and floor in the shower, as well as new shower hardware plus a new exhaust fan. What I truly appreciated was that he kept us informed daily as to what he would be doing, and he did accomplished all in a timely manner. Except for the gentleman who came to "mud" the walls and ceiling, and the glass door owner measuring for the new shower doors, Marlin did all the plumbing, tile work, and electrical work himself with his helper. There was not a parade of services outsourced to others. The job turned out so well, and we are very proud of this guest bathroom now. I highly recommend anyone who needs tile work or bathroom renovation to contact Marlin Edinger. Our experience could not have been better. By the way, the price he charged for his many days of work and the all the materials for this job was beyond fair!!"

"Had ceramic tile installed. Installers tracked grout into newly installed wood floors, used my personal broom and bucket, still have not completed to last bit of installation after two weeks, baseboard has several areas installed incorrectly - huge gaps. Called empire about situation. They advised a install supervisor would call. After a week, still no call. Hardwood floor installers were great...no issues."

"You don't have a fantastic experience very often when you hire someone. This is the exception. Ken and Joe are the salt of the earth. I begged them to charge me more. (Yes, I actually did) Their product is fantastic and exactly what we were looking for. Prompt, professional and very knowledgeable about their products and applications. I highly recommend you talking to these guys if you have any grout related work. We had a contractor put a backsplash in our kitchen and the grout was different colors in various spots. Sir Grout came in and applied their product to our exact color specifications. Then they sealed it. Now it looks awesome and it will last. My wife was very happy after they were done. Great job Sir Grout !"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

To ensure an even and unbending surface to lay tiles on, you’ll typically need to put a subfloor under a tile floor. Fiber cement backboards are the most common choice, but using plywood is also possible. Don’t neglect this step, or you could risk water damage and grout or tiles prematurely cracking or crumbling, especially in an area with high foot traffic.

The underlayment determines a ceramic tile’s sturdiness, and a cement board or backer board works best. Be sure to tape the joints when using these materials, and consider laying it on top of a layer of thin-set for more stability.

The easiest tile size to install is large tiles, and they’re easier to install than small tiles—the job is faster and simpler when there’s less placing, adhering, and grouting to do. However, when tiles get really big, they’re more difficult to handle, cut, and fit. Standard floor tile sizes are 12-by-12 inches, 18-by-18 inches, and 12-by-24 inches.

The difference between floor and wall tiles is that floor tiles generally have higher strength and porosity ratings than wall tiles. Wall tiles are typically weaker and more likely to crack or become damaged under sustained pressure like high foot traffic.

For this reason, avoid using wall tiles on floors and vice versa.

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.
