"I started working with Fran at Custom Fireplaces and More in September of 2015. We completed the installation the middle of November. I found our interaction to be very pleasant, and learned that Fran is very knowledgeable about wood stoves and safety. The builder of our house had installed a very nice electric fireplace, but I wanted a wood stove, so Fran led me through the process of finding a great stove that would vent from the rear and out the fake fireplace. We settled on a Quadrafire Explorer II. Concerning installation, Danny and Anthony did a fantastic job of installing our stove! They were very professional, knowing exactly what to do and wasting no time. They were very polite and exceptionally well mannered. I enjoyed having them in my home for two days. Although a one day job, they had to return to finish. The crew previously using the machine that transports the stove up the steps and into the house had dropped it, but failed to notify Danny. Through no fault of his own, or mine, they had to return on the following Monday. My stove had sat on the front steps all weekend. Immediately upon their arrival, they repaired the machine and finished the installation. Upon finishing, Fran had Danny request a check for the full price of the contacted price. She had said she didn't want me to use my credit card as she didn't want to pay the charges, which disappointed me as I was counting on the rewards to offset her failure to deal at all on the prices. I did as she requested and wrote the check with Danny's assurance that she would refund me anything to which I was owed. I knew I had some coming back as I had a $100 coupon, there was no framing required in the roof, and they were able to use some shorter connectors from the stove to the flue. Once I get that final bill and my check, I'll be glad to upgrade the four stars to five for value, and the total to 5 stars. Fran was very safety conscious, as I have said. My son built the hearth pad to her specifications and covered it with brick looking tile. He continued it through the fireplace cavity and then concealed some LED lighting to accentuate the tile work. It looks awesome, although he hasn't had time yet to finish the decorative tile work yet. Because of Fran and Bob's planning, we were able to achieve the look of an authentic fireplace with the stove sitting in front of it and venting through the flue. Fran didn't think they could do it at first, but by my insisting, and with Bob's plans, we got it done!! We are thrilled!! I would highly recommend Custom Fireplaces and More. They represent numerous fine companies and are so knowledgeable about anything to do with stoves or fireplaces. They do quality work and are very dependable. They worked with us so the installation could be done at our convenience. Hire them, you'll be glad you did."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Cleaning your own chimney can be risky, especially if it hasn't been done in a long time and you lack the proper tools, knowledge, and safety equipment. The process involves getting onto the roof and handling soot, which poses safety issues. Remember, inhaling chimney soot is a significant health risk. Wearing the proper respiratory equipment is required.

How to light a gas fireplace depends on the particular model of gas fireplace you have in your home. In most cases, you can light gas fireplaces using a control panel, remote, key, or switch. You should reference your fireplace’s manual to see how your unit operates.

Some types of electric fireplaces use more electricity than others. Models that produce 1,500 watts will have more of an effect on your heating bill than 750-watt models.

Electric fireplaces use an average of $1.85 of electricity every eight hours. These minimal operational costs aren’t likely to make a big difference in your electric bill—unless you’re using it as a primary heating source for your home and it’s running most of the time.

While most stoves won’t last two decades, some do! Gas stoves and pellet stoves are more likely to go the distance than electric stoves or induction cooktops, and maintenance can go a long way toward increasing longevity.

Installing a fireplace outside could be more affordable, but that depends on several factors. If you’re only considering an outdoor fireplace to save on installation costs, you may be surprised once you start receiving quotes. On average, an outdoor fireplace costs around $3,000 to install, but the price can vary significantly depending on how ambitious your outdoor design plans are.
