"We had two different grades of stone delivered and installed. The second delivery was delayed by a mistake at the quarry but Jonathan at Putnam Greenspace worked with us and the quarry to reschedule the second delivery /install went as perfectly as the first."

"We hired J&S Construction remodeling to repair a shed roof, steps to our wooden porch, and to install a railing on our front porch steps. Couldn't be happier with the outcome. He did a great job and quickly. We were working within a time frame and appreciate him accomplishing everything in under 3 days. His estimate for the repairs was affordable and on par with the other estimates we received. We will be hiring J&S again in the future. * I tried uploading photos but it says the file size is too large."

"For over eight months I have tried on my own to get several foundation wall repair companies, local and out of town, to fix an opening in a foundation wall at my home. The highly recommended companies, a total of six, came out and indicated that they could not do the job. In total frustration and on the verge of giving up I remembered HomeAdvisor. I have used them in the past with other projects involving my home with great success. So, I entered the foundation wall problem on HomeAdvisor.com and only one company popped up, Top Notch Lawn and Home Services. I contacted them, and a few days later Chanse, the owner, came out and took a look at the problem and indicated that he and his crew could fix it. Needless to say, that took a great deal of weight off my shoulders. A few days later, Chanse and his crew arrived and repaired the foundation wall that had plagued me for over eight months. They also re-landscape and re-seeded the area that was affected by the repair. This company is by far the best I have ever came across. I will be recommending this company to anyone needing foundation repair or lawn and home services. This company is truly remarkable in its professionalism, experience, and speediness of service. If I could, I would have given them ten stars. Great job HomeAdvisor for listing this company."

Customers say: Quick response

"Paul and crew were fantastic. He came out several times to quote the work and to rework the quote to better fit in our budget. We had an existing deck extended and a ramp added, a new garage stairway built and a new deck built for our front entry. Our big focus for this project was improving access from the house to the outdoors for both my handicap husband and our aging arthritic dogs. He’s a busy guy (because he is good) therefore we had to wait awhile for the project to begin but it was worth the wait. They showed up on time every day until the project was completed. He asked for design clarification when necessary and changed coarse without complaint when changes needed to be made. Honest, trustworthy and talented. The quality of his (and crews) work was top notch. Paul takes pride in the quality of the materials used and his workmanship which shows in the end result. The deck in the front is a beautiful extension of our home that not only “classed up” the entry but extended our livable space in this home. Both my husband and I have many decades of home improvement under our belt and can say with confidence that Paul is a fantastic resource for any project you maybe considering. Very pleased."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, chipmunk holes may have two or more entrances. Chipmunks can create an entire network of burrows. Having multiple entrances makes it easier for them when trying to escape from a predator, such as a snake, or if an entrance collapses due to flooding. Each entrance leads to the nesting chamber underground, which is where the chipmunk spends the majority of its time sleeping.

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

A crawl space can be as little as 42 inches below the grade of your house, but this is not always recommended in flood-prone areas. At a minimum, there must be at least 16 inches of clearance between the ground and the floor joists to access the space in an emergency.

Consultation with the local government helps identify necessary permits, avoid project delays or legal issues, and protect project integrity.
