"We have had J. Stephens plumbing perform plumbing services for us 3 times so far. Each time has been excellent. Most recently, this company replaced our garbage disposal last week and installed a new dishwasher for us today. The company always calls back promptly and has arrived at our house at the time promised - great communication. Prices are reasonable - plumbing services are never cheap, but this company's prices seem fair. The plumbers who showed up to perform the work have always been professional and knowledgeable. Our new dishwasher was apparently a bit of a challenge to install (I overheard some of the conversation during installation) and also spoke with the plumbers about it after installation, but they knew exactly what to do to fix the issues. Excellent experience all around. Will continue to hire them for all our future plumbing needs. Replace disposal: $489 Install dishwasher (including picking dishwasher up from Lowe's): $298"

"Incredible experience. From their consultant through the proposal to the installation and follow-up, these folks are professionals. I'm 100% satisfied with every aspect of this experience, something I did not expect! I'm especially satisfied with their consultant, Robert W., who spent hours of analysis and measurements before suggesting the perfect system for our home. Their price was competitive with other vendors, but their service and professionalism exceeded anything I've experienced in this industry. Well done."

"All the positive reviews are absolutely spot on. You couldn't ask for nicer people. They showed up early, knew exactly what they were doing, and charged a very reasonable price. The job was called "handymen," but I think that's underselling it a bit. They opened up my ceiling, installed a new beam, replaced the drywall, spackled it, painted it, and mounted a heavybag. I wanted this thing to be done right, and was it ever. They cleaned up and finished ahead of schedule. You need something done well? Call them!"

Install Garbage Disposal questions, answered by experts

Once you have your garbage disposal disconnected, you can remove the mounting bracket by unscrewing the bolts that are holding the bracket. You can back them out just enough to pop off the snap ring, which prevents the bottom portion of the bracket from disconnecting from the top when you unscrew the bolts. Use a regular screwdriver to pop off the snap ring, and the rest of the components should fall off by themselves.

Never put glass in the garbage disposal. It can damage your disposal or eject shards of glass out of the disposal and cause injury. If you get broken glass in your garbage disposal, turn it off and cut the power from the breaker, use a tool like pliers or tongs to remove the glass, and use a wet-dry vacuum to remove the remaining glass pieces. If you can’t access the disposal safely, call a garbage disposal repair pro.

The two main negatives of garbage disposals are they are a safety hazard in homes with children, and they frequently encounter blockage issues. While they might be annoying to fix and monitor, garbage disposals can significantly lower your trash use and are a great way to dispose of organic waste. While there are negatives, the vast majority of homeowners acknowledge the positives are enough to install a disposal in their home.

On average, a garbage disposal can last anywhere from 7 to 12 years, with many models functioning well for about 10 years. With heavy usage, a motor may last a minimum of five years, while grinding plates will wear down over time. It's generally a good idea to consider a replacement if your unit is approaching the 10-year mark. Other signs that it's time for a new disposal include frequent leaks, persistent clogs, lingering odors, lack of power, or unusual noises. If your unit is not that old, it's worth investigating if a less expensive part, like a rubber seal or a loose hose, is causing the issue.

On average, it takes one to four hours for a professional to install a garbage disposal. This includes removing the old unit, taking necessary measurements for positioning, removing and fitting new pipes, and installing the brand-new disposal system. If there are unforeseen issues, such as accessibility concerns, the process takes longer.
