"Working with Emily made me wonder why I put off decorating our guest room for so long!!! She made such a warm and inviting space for our guests to stay. The space is super relaxing which is great because when you're visiting me, you're visiting my 3 kids, 3 and under. One of my favorite parts is she was able to give me pieces to buy in my price range (ya know Target). This became such a fun project that I had been seriously dreading! Thanks Emily!!!"

"I lucked out when I found Connie Glover of CG Staging & Interior Designs. Connie came to my house the next day. As she walked through, she stayed a few minutes in each room, telling me specific suggestions of what she would like to do for each room. She told me easy ways to make the home lighter and appealing to a large cross section of potential buyers. Connie was immediately inspired by my Victorian renovation, had great ideas for it, already had available a lot of what we would need, checked her thoughts with me, and was engaging and friendly. I knew we would work great together, so I cancelled my other interviews and hired Connie right then. Connie got my staging completed in our planned 2 week time frame. She stays in communication. She followed through on all requests from my realtor. She doesn't run up a big bill when she can find a bargain. I paid a deposit and some materials up front, and it sure worked for me that her actual fee gets paid at the closing when the property is sold. My home looks extra beautiful, and should sell higher and faster, thanks to all Connie's artistry, care, detail, and enthusiasm in staging. Two thumbs up for CG Staging & Interior Designs!!"

"Kitchen Design and Remodeling Review for Studio Spinola Cabinetry Susan Spinola provided a personal approach to what was best for my home and what I might like in an overall design. I had no clue of what to do. Susan guided me by asking me what kind of overall preferences I have concerning home design as well as my life and lifestyle. She shared with me several pictures of kitchen styles and interior design. Susan took the time to understand my preferences, needs, as well as limitations of what was feasible given the home layout, while also offering innovative suggestions that elevated the overall final design. The execution phase was equally exceptional. Susan coordinated excellent construction and trades people that work with her. The remodeling was completed within the estimated timeframe. Once the project started, Susan remained focused on my remodel to make sure coordination of work remained on track. I wholeheartedly recommend Susan Spinola. A truly positive experience."

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

One downside of installing a soffit above your kitchen cabinets is that it may make your kitchen appear smaller. This visual illusion occurs because the soffit may make the cabinetry and ceiling appear shorter. However, the benefit of being able to hide unsightly wires or plumbing or HVAC fixtures may be worth the disadvantage of a smaller-seeming kitchen. Consider making your kitchen appear larger by finding ways to add more light and visual appeal to the high spots in the room.

While the terms 'interior designer' and 'interior decorator' are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct professions with some overlapping work. The primary difference lies in the scope of their projects.

An interior decorator focuses on the aesthetics of a space, making less permanent decisions about decor. Their work involves selecting colors, fabrics, furniture, wall art, paint, and other finishes to 'dress' a room and enhance its style.

An interior designer has a broader scope that includes a decorator's aesthetic focus but also extends to the structural and functional aspects of a space. Designers are qualified to plan layouts, make structural changes, and manage overall functionality. They handle permanent decisions regarding fixtures like cabinets and bathtubs, establish floor plans, and may hire contractors.

Due to the technical skills required, interior designers typically have formal education, certification, and may hold a license, which can result in higher fees. As a general rule, it is best to hire an interior designer for major remodeling projects and an interior decorator for projects focused on establishing or refreshing a home's interior style.

Establishing a whole-house color palette gives your home a sense of uniformity and makes your interior look more visually appealing. Overdoing a single color can make your home feel monotonous, while too many colors can create a sense of chaos and disorganization. When in doubt, choose a foundation color and then use complementary colors to accent.

Designers optimize space, improve aesthetics, and recommend durable, high-quality materials.
