"I had old horsehair plaster walls that had holes in them plus a crack plus a cutout where the plumber had to fix a leak. Kyle and his crew did an awesome job of fixing the holes and cutout and crack in the original plaster. They were here on time and left my house cleaner than what they found it. Now itâ s time to paint once the plaster dries. Thanks Wilson Plastering!!"

"Steve was very professional, courteous, always on time, and completed high quality work. The project lasted for several days and he arrived on time every day and kept the job site very clean. He patched up the larges holes in our living room, making it look like they were never there and all the window sills and casings now look new again. The best part of the project was the newly framed and rocked bathroom. He went above and beyond to make sure that the walls in this old home are now nice and straight, which made for easy tile installation after he was finished."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

You can plaster over regular drywall, but it's essential to prepare the surface properly. Before plastering, the drywall should be clean, free of dust, and any loose or peeling paint should be removed. Applying a primer specifically designed for plastering can improve adhesion. Some professionals recommend applying a base coat of plaster or joint compound to create a better surface for the plaster to adhere to. Proper preparation ensures a smooth and durable plaster finish over regular drywall.

With its breathability and flexibility, lime plaster is among the most durable of all plaster types. It's also fire-resistant and has a proven track record, as people have been using it for thousands of years.

However, all plaster types will last for many years with the right care and treatment. Proper preparation and installation will also help ensure your plaster walls look great for as long as possible.

Repairing plaster walls or ceilings is almost always worthwhile. It restores the appearance of your home, and if it's an exterior wall, the repair can improve curb appeal and provide a great return on investment when selling. Plaster repairs can also reinforce the wall, preventing minor cracks from spreading, and improve your home’s energy efficiency by fixing gaps in the insulative material, potentially lowering your heating and cooling bills. Additionally, hiring a professional allows them to check if the damage is from a serious underlying issue, such as foundation instability. Catching a problem like this early could save you thousands.

The allure of Venetian plaster lies in its unique appearance and individual characteristics in a home. It’s sophisticated and multidimensional and has a rich history dating back to Ancient Rome. This type of plaster finish is durable and represents a style of luxury that has been practiced for thousands of years. Many designers pair the texture of Venetian plaster with modern furnishings, resulting in an elegant and refined aesthetic.

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.
