"Contacted S&S via Angies List to get a quote on some electrical work. Scott and his team were very responsive and helpful. It turns out that I did not use S&S for this work at this time, but I wanted to comment favorably on their customer service. Would consider them for future work and recommend others consider them."

"Ryan arrived on time and got right to work. He was at my home for 4 hours, worked non-stop, cleaned up everything and charged me less than the quote. My wife and I are very satisfied and we will use him again if more electrical problems crop up. He is very kind and personable and one of the “good guys”. Rating: A+++++."

"Quickly and efficiently Randy and Manny checked out the problem with the kitchen's outlets--an older house that needs new wiring to handle high electric use--and were able to fix things so I didn't have to have extensive work done. They explained every thing they were doing and answered all questions--even gave a quick estimate in the event I planned on rewiring the house. So impressed with them, their teamwork and they way they handled this call. Thank you so much"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

GFCI outlets help prevent dangers from ground faults that can cause shocks. This is a different issue that a ground circuit can’t fully address. It’s best to use GFCI outlets combined with ground circuits for complete protection for you and your electronics.

How far you can run underground electric depends on the wire gauge (generally AWG) and the circuit voltage. Too much voltage drop in an electrical circuit can negatively affect performance, so the smaller the voltage drop, the better. Ideally, it shouldn't exceed 3%. The smaller the wire and the longer the run, the more significant the voltage drop.

For example, with a 120-volt circuit, you can run 60 feet of 12 AWG cable without losing more than 3% voltage. With a 240-volt circuit, you can run 120 feet of 12 AWG wire while maintaining a voltage drop of 3% or less.

You should never plug a normal 120v appliance into a special 240v outlet, as it can quickly burn out the appliance. This will cause irreparable damage to the appliance and, in worse case scenarios, cause damage to your circuit breaker. Check your appliance’s rating before plugging it into a 220v outlet to avoid electrical disaster.

Window ACs use 500 to 1,400 watts per hour of electricity, while mini-splits use 500 to 700 watts per hour. However, if you need to cool multiple zones in your house, your mini-split can use as much as 2,000 watts per hour. How often you run your system will impact how much electricity you use (and how much you pay per month).

Ultimately, the best device depends on what you’re measuring. A voltmeter only measures volts, while a multimeter measures volts, current, resistance, humidity, and possibly much more, depending on the model. If you think you’ll need to measure more than volts, consider investing in a multimeter so you have a tool that can help you with various household projects.
