Customers say: Super punctual

"WOW! We called around and got quotes from many masonry pros, and then we heard about Kevin through a friend. He was truly amazing from start to finish! He wanted to learn all about our project, and put together several proposals that would fit our needs & budget. He actually talked us OUT of a couple of unnecessary upgrades that most others were pushing. From design to scheduling to followup, he worked with us to get everything done in a timely and super high quality manner. We couldn't be more happy and we will never use anyone else for such projects. Highly recommended! A+++++++"

"Valter and his crew were prompt, courteous, respectful, and hard-working. Communication was great, and Valter consulted me at every step. His crew flawlessly re-pointed our foundation in several spots, built a new border around our front garden, and laid in a paved walkway. The results were stunning. Valter was direct, honest, and fair in his estimate and pricing. We will definitely work with him again!"

"I had a crack in my basement foundation. I called 3 companies to help and ended up choosing Set in Stone. They were able to help me much more quickly than other companies could, and they did a great job and were very professional, pleasant to work with, and reasonably priced. I highly recommend them."

"Working with Tyler from Four Seasons was a good experience and I'm so glad to have found him. He is knowledgeable, about his trade, very good at masonry/hardscaping/landscaping, and easy to work with. The stone-faced and bluestone-topped steps he built for my house look beautiful. Tyler is also a good communicator, does the work when he says he'll be there, and gives accurate estimates."

"Being new to Rhode Island as permanent residents, we often have to rely on referrals or online research to find companies to do a variety of jobs around our home. Living in a condo community, we approached the HOA about replacing a tree that had split apart in our front yard due to high winds. HOA boards often have specific requirements and when we met with Joe Shaw, he was excellent at accommodating our request and working with us to find the right tree, given the soil and amount of daily sunlight were problematic. As scheduled, the tree was installed and we are extremely satisfied with the installation and the tree choice. Joe is very easy to work with and quite knowledgeable. I would recommend Nature Redesigned Landscaping enthusiastically. We are very pleased! Thanks Joe (and your crew)!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Real stone is exactly what it sounds like: It’s real stone sourced from the earth without additives. It is durable and unique, but it’s difficult to work with because of its weight, challenge in sourcing, and high cost. Stone veneer mimics the look of real stone but is actually engineered with a mixture of Portland cement, natural minerals, and a colorant. While it’s more affordable and easier to work with, it’s less durable and may appear manufactured to the trained eye.

Depending on the amount of soot present, you can vacuum some of it using a brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Then, remove the leftovers with a mild cleaner, such as dish soap or vinegar mixed with water. Before applying a cleaning solution, saturate the bricks with clean water to prevent the cleaner from penetrating beyond the surface and causing structural damage to the bricks.

Yes, limewash on brick can accumulate dust over time. Its porous nature can attract dust particles, especially in environments with high levels of dust or dirt. Additionally, if the limewash surface is left unsealed, it may be more prone to collecting dust. Additionally, incorrectly applied limewash will generate dust. Causes include applying it too thickly instead of thin layers and not allowing enough drying time between layers. Regular maintenance, such as gentle cleaning or dusting, can help mitigate dusty issues.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

The best tool for drilling into brick or mortar is a rotary hammer drill which is a large hammer drill with low rotation speed and high torque. Regular drills with a hammer function are also excellent tools for drilling into brick when the diameter of the hole is 1/2 inch or less. It might be possible to drill into brick with a standard drill if you’re only drilling a very small hole, but note that masonry work will put a lot of wear on a standard drill, and the tool may not be strong enough to get through brick.
