"I can't recommend Worthley Masonry enough. I first hired Worthley Masonry to rebuild ~30' of a retaining wall that was bowing out and falling apart. They took the wall down, added proper drainage, straightened the wall, and then rebuilt it using the stones that were originally there to match the rest of the retaining walls on my property. They did such a great job on the retaining wall that I hired them to re-do my ugly poured cement walkway. They added steps to make it safer, set it at a proper gradient for drainage, and created a beautiful design using pavers and edging stones I had picked out. Communication was top notch and they answered all of my questions and explained why they were doing things the way they were. I couldn't be happier with how my retaining wall and front walkway turned out. Travis (the owner) is extremely hard working and completely honest about everything he does. He's easy to talk to and is extremely proud of his work and it shows. He puts the time and effort into his work as if it was his own home. We gave him creative freedom with our walkway and it looks amazing. I'd hire him again for any stone work I needed done in the future."

"It is with great alacrity and satisfaction that I write this review of Arch Masonry. We undertook some renovations on our house, and the lower section required masonry work. I reached out to Arch Masonry, and Derk promptly contacted me, coming to our home to provide a fair estimate for the job. Derek’s employees were professional and completed the work with great care. We had the front of the house mended, and we were so pleased that we decided to continue the masonry work on the back of the house and the foundation. Derek was timely in his work and offered competitive pricing. I would highly recommend Arch Masonry to anyone seeking high-quality masonry services. Derek embodies professionalism, and I often wish I had the money, land, and resources to build a grand castle in my neighborhood, constructed by Derek’s masonry company. Sincerely, The Mosleys"

"They have a drone that took excellent photos before and after the job. The The job was to replace the chimney stack from the roof up. The chimney looks great. Unfortunately they delayed the work day 3 times, blaming each other for miscommunication. The day they finally showed up (over a month later) they requested an extra $1,800.00 blaming the other partner for under estimating the job. I regret not telling him to take his scaffolding down and leave. Nice enough guys but that was not right."

"Just for EASY BASIC jobs. I had them remove small decorative stones and replaced with new plants/shrubs. They just dug holes and plants. I asked them to put weed barrier down, which I had. They werenâ t doing it, so I went out to water new plants.......then they started to use it!! Good people, price reasonable for the job"

"I had a wonderful experience with Tom Ricci, owner of American Building Co, whom I found through Angie’s List. He responded to my request for a mason right away, arrived exactly when we had agreed, and clearly explained the work that needed to be done. He sent me a detailed quote that same evening and completed the job effortlessly. His craftsmanship was truly impressive, and the finished result—repairs to my front steps—was impeccable. Tom is also incredibly versatile in his knowledge; he’s a true jack of all trades. I highly recommend him!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

No, it’s not recommended to attach shutters to brick without drilling. Brick is dense and built to last, so adhesives and shortcut methods don’t usually cut it. Even heavy-duty glue struggles to hold up over time—especially against wind, moisture, and temperature changes. Most no-drill options are made for materials like vinyl or wood, not solid masonry. Skipping the drill might seem easier, but it puts your shutters—and anything below them—at risk. For a secure, lasting install, drilling is the way to go. It takes more effort up front, but the result is safer and more reliable.

Granite is the strongest commercially available stone houses are built from. It’s also more commonly available, which means transport costs aren’t as high because a granite quarry isn’t too far from a build site. Limestone and sandstone are popular materials as well, but they aren’t as strong or weather-resistant as granite.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

Initially, brick staining is not cheaper than painting. However, while it has a higher up-front cost, it may be more cost-effective in the long run. Brick stain can last for 20 years or longer, compared to paint, which usually starts to peel away in three to five years.

Professionally done brick repointing can last 20 to 30 years, sometimes longer. However, the exact lifespan depends on several factors, including the quality of the mortar, the skill of the mason, and exposure to weather. If you live in an area with harsh weather or frequent freeze-thaw cycles, you may need to repoint more often. Repointing that is done as a DIY project may only last 10 to 15 years. It's time to repoint when you notice signs of mortar failure, such as crumbling or missing mortar, holes, or vines growing between the bricks. Regular inspections can help you catch these issues early.
