"I recently bought a house that had knob and tube wiring throughout. Rittner's Electric did the re-wiring. I highly recommend Dave Rittner and Rittner's Electric for your electric contractor and I would/will be using for my future electric work. A total house rewiring is not a one day job...it's a multiple week job. From the initial estimate thru all the work and up to the final inspection Dave was the total professional. Dave's pricing and estimates were fair and spot on, as was the amount of time needed to finish the project. I work out of my house and Dave's communication as to what he was planning on working for each particular day made it easy to plan out what/where I could work. Bottom line, if you need an electrician might as well get a top notch, professional and experienced one so, just call Dave Rittner."

"Kevin did excellent work replacing an outdoor cable wire, obtaining a permit on my behalf from the local township and coordinating the work with the municipality and electricity supplier. He was thorough, knowledgeable and diligent and extremely patient despite the poor communication from the electricity supplier and crew. Kevin also made safe several outlets after mold remediation and a few others that he noticed requiring rewiring. Kevinâ s work and professionalism is exceptional and I highly recommend his services and will hire him again."

"I'm incredibly happy with our install and electrical work. We had recess lighting and 3 junction boxes with fans/lighting installed. The team was knowledgable and professional from initial quote through to cleanup. They go above and beyond, investing in craftsmanship and quality, charging reasonable prices and sticking to their quote. I'll definitely be calling Freedom Electric for all of our future electric work."

"Excellent. Electrical work in a 120 year old house in not easy at best, its a real challenge that includes working in the old attic and basement. The fans are beautiful and both working as promised. They cleaned up after the job and worked steady the whole time they were here. Could not be more pleased and will use them again whenever I need electrical work done. Thanks!"

"We really like working with Ian. He was able to work with us on what we needed. Just wanted to replace a 50-year old electric panel that was not safe for our new house and bump up to a 200-amp service. Not we needed 200-amps, but it is nice for any expansion or future projects we may have. HIs team was quick and took care of everything. Even contacted the township for permitting. And the township even came by a week later to upgrade the service line to the house to accommodate the 200-amp service. Feel like we are in a much safer house now! Appreciate IEC and will call them for any additional or service needs! (old panel on left - new on right!)"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, electric-start snow blowers need to be plugged in to start, but you can unplug them and go once they’re up and running. Simply plug the snow blower into an outdoor outlet and press the start button. Once it starts, you can unplug it and use it freely. The idea for these types of snow blowers is to simplify the starting process from the typical pull-string starts.

You can tell if a breaker is GFCI by looking for a red or yellow test and reset button that you can press in and out. You’ll know if an outlet is GFCI if the red reset button is located in between the two pronged sections.

The average radon mitigation system uses about 876 kWh of electricity per year, although the exact amount of electricity used will vary depending on the size of the radon fan. Once the system is installed, the annual increase to your energy bill could range from $30 to $300 per year, again depending on the size of the fan.

It can be safe to buy or live in a house with knob and tube (K&T) wiring, but only if the system is in good condition, functional, and has been thoroughly inspected and approved by a licensed electrician. Never purchase a home with K&T wiring without getting a professional electrical inspection first.

Key considerations include:

  • Safety and Condition: An inspector will verify that the wiring is safe and has not deteriorated. Over time, the insulation can wear away, leaving exposed wires that pose a significant fire or shock hazard.

  • System Capacity: The electrical service should be at least 60 amps. However, even at this capacity, K&T systems often struggle to handle the demands of modern appliances and electronics.

  • Lack of Grounding: Knob and tube wiring is an ungrounded system, which is a safety concern for many modern devices.

  • Ongoing Maintenance: If you live in a home with K&T wiring, it's recommended to have it inspected by an electrician every one to two years to ensure it remains in safe working order.

Ultimately, any inspection or modification of a knob and tube system should always be performed by a certified professional.

The cost to replace or install an electrical outlet can vary. On average, you can expect to pay between $125 and $215 per outlet, including labor and materials. For a standard 120v outlet, the material cost is typically between $10 and $50. Labor costs for an electrician usually range from $50 to $100 per hour. The total cost can be higher if there are complex electrical issues to resolve. Specialized outlets like GFCI or high-voltage types can cost up to $50 each for the material alone. If you are replacing many outlets throughout your home, the total project cost could be between $900 and $3,000, but you may receive a better per-outlet rate from the electrician.
