"This was the second time we used H L Bowman for our plumbing needs and we have been impressed both times. Their plumbers are prompt, courteous, and friendly, in addition to being great at their craft. For this visit, I had a leak under a kitchen sink and did not realize that I needed to have the entire faucet replaced. The plumber recommended the closest plumbing supply store and waited while I selected the one I wanted. He efficiently did the replacement. Very happy with H L Bowman and would highly recommend them."

"We have a 150-old house with a small, unfinished, and very damp basement (but no standing water). In the summer the humidity was continuously over 70%. We bought the largest dehumidifier you can get at a home improvement center, which was unable to get the humidity below 60%. We just wanted to be able to store things there without having them ruined. We had three contractors look at it and make recommendations. The first proposed an elaborate and very expensive foam insulation approach (though he described it as "relatively cheap"). To boot, a number of his reviewers described results that were not as promised and complained that getting follow-up service was difficult to impossible. The second had a one-size-fits-all approach whereby he digs a trench and installs drainage pipes all around the perimeter. This would not only have been unnecessary, but almost certainly would not have solved our problem, which was extremely moist air. The third was Once-and-Done Waterproofing, and the owner, Jeff Johnson, proposed to install a powerful commercial-grade dehumidifier, for what seemed like a very reasonable price. We went with him. The results have been fantastic! This unit easily keeps the humidity in the mid-30% range and completely solved our problem. Jeff is a no-nonsense, straight shooter who does exactly what he promises, when he promises it. His office manager Shawn was great at communication and scheduling. Jeff gives you his personal mobile phone number and he actually answers it! We could not be happier with the results!"

Affordable Plumbers questions, answered by experts

Build a reliable routine for plumbing by disconnecting outdoor hoses and insulating exposed pipes every fall before the first Wind Gap frost. During winter cold snaps, monitor unheated basement areas and check your sump pump discharge line for ice. Inspect outdoor spigots for freeze damage every spring, and flush your water heater. In summer, monitor your water bills to detect hidden leaks and test private well water quality.

Helpful?

Watch for visible scale buildup around faucets and toilet tanks, which indicates hard water issues common in Wind Gap. Check for reduced water pressure or sudden spikes from municipal line variations. After harsh winters, inspect basements and crawl spaces for cracked pipe joints. If your older home still has galvanized steel pipes, schedule plumbing work to replace them before they fail entirely.

Helpful?

Hard water from local groundwater sources degrades toilet flappers and causes rapid sediment buildup in water heaters. Wind Gap experiences harsh winters, making outdoor hose bibs and exposed pipes highly vulnerable to freeze damage. Sump pumps also endure heavy stress during spring snowmelt and require constant attention. Finally, aging cast iron drain lines in mid-century homes corrode and demand replacement to prevent slow drains or complete pipe collapses.

Helpful?

Prioritize safety by installing anti-scald mixing valves at tubs to protect children from hot water burns. For homes built before 1986, test your water for lead and address any identified lead solder immediately. Always cover open sump pits to eliminate drowning hazards for small pets and children. Ensure all major plumbing work receives proper PA code inspections to keep your family safe from hidden gas or water leaks.

Helpful?

Select materials that comply with the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. Use PEX tubing for interior supply lines, as it resists hard water mineral buildup and withstands freezing temperatures better than rigid copper. For drain lines, choose durable PVC or ABS plastics to replace aging cast iron. If you rely on a private well, test your water quality before starting plumbing work to ensure your materials resist acidic corrosion.
